Woman Settles with Methodist Medical Center in Abortion Case

A settlement has been reached in the case of a woman who filed a lawsuit against a Des Moines hospital claiming a medical mistake led her to have an abortion. Attorney Guy Cook says the suit filed about a year ago on behalf of 47-year-old Kristy Oswald was scheduled to go to trial later this month. The suit was dismissed Monday, and the settlement amount was kept confidential. Oswald claimed in the lawsuit that medical staff at Iowa Methodist Medical Center failed to tell her a test showed she was pregnant before she had a heart procedure in April 2006.

China's 1-Child Policy Now Threatens Crime Wave

A new study published by BMJ, which used to be known as the British Medical Journal, has documented a worsening problem on which WND has been reporting for 12 years: the domination of males in a Chinese society that encourages the abortion of unborn daughters. The new report says males under the age of 20 outnumbered females by more than 32 million and warned, "China will see very high and steadily worsening sex ratios in the reproductive age group over the next two decades."

Obama Boosts Anti-Abortion Recruitment

The first hint of a stir came just after Election Day, when the computer servers at Americans United for Life crashed. People were swamping the Web site to sign a petition urging President-elect Barack Obama to stand firm against abortion. Obama’s first 84 days in office have been like an extended recruiting drive for the anti-abortion movement, reinvigorating a constituency he sought to neutralize during the campaign. Activists report a noticeable spike in activity as Obama moves to defend and expand a woman’s right to choose an abortion – causing anti-abortion voters to mobilize in ways never needed during the Bush administration.

Homeland Security On Guard for 'Right-Wing Extremists'

A newly unclassified Department of Homeland Security report warns against the possibility of violence by unnamed "right-wing extremists" concerned about illegal immigration, increasing federal power, restrictions on firearms, abortion and the loss of U.S. sovereignty and singles out returning war veterans as particular threats. The report, titled "Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," dated April 7, states that "threats from white supremacist and violent anti-government groups during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts."

HHS Nominee Sebelius Understated Donations >From Abortion Doctor

President Barack Obama's health secretary nominee got nearly three times as much political money from a controversial abortion doctor as she told senators.

The Health and Human Services Department said Monday that the omission was an oversight that Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius would correct.

In a response to questions from the Senate Finance Committee made public last week, Sebelius wrote that she received $12,450 between 1994-2001 from Dr. George Tiller, one of the nation's few late-term abortion providers.

But in addition to those campaign donations, records reviewed by The Associated Press show that Tiller gave at least $23,000 more from 2000-2002 to a political action committee Sebelius established while insurance commissioner to raise money for fellow Democrats.

U.S. Funds Ukrainians' Family Planning Services (abortifacients)

Launched in December 2006, the Together for Health (TfH) public-private partnership aims to shift Ukrainians away from widespread use of abortion to use of modern contraception (abortifacients). The partnership brings together the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and seven national and international manufacturers and distributors of contraceptives. With funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), TfH provides pharmacists, doctors and other health workers with training to ensure they have both the knowledge and the supplies to offer quality family planning and reproductive health services.
