Records Won't Be Sealed In Botched Abortion Case

The public has the right to view evidence in the case of a woman accused of illegally providing healthcare during a botched abortion at a Hialeah clinic, a judge ruled Thursday. Lawyers for Belkis Gonzalez, 44, citing extensive media coverage and harsh commentary in Internet postings on anti-abortion websites, had asked that evidence be kept secret to ``assure a fair trial.'' Gonzalez fears ''physical and mental harm after receiving anonymous threats,'' said her lawyers, who also asked that prosecutors be barred from speaking to reporters about the case.

'Selective' Abortion Causes 32 Mil Extra China Males

Selective abortion in favour of males has left China with 32 million more boys than girls, creating an imbalance that will endure for decades, an investigation released on Friday warned. The probe provides ammunition for those experts who predict China's obsession with a male heir will sow a bitter fruit as men facing a life of bachelorhood fight for a bride. "Although some imaginative and extreme solutions have been suggested, nothing can be done now to prevent this imminent generation of excess men," says the paper, published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Pro-Life Group Plants 'Cemetery of Innocents' on Pro-Abort University Campus

Abortions happen every day. In fact, 4,000 are performed daily in the United States, according to the Pro-Life Alliance, an anti-abortion campus organization at the University of Florida. To drive the point home, the alliance created the "Cemetery of Innocents'' this week on the Reitz Union North Lawn, with about 2,000 American flags, each representing two different victims of abortion. The organization's goal is to inform the public of what it sees as the injustice of abortions.

Obama Boosting Anti-Abortion Drive

The first days of the Obama administration has seen a noticable spike in anti-abortion recruitment efforts, a report said Monday. Politico.com reported that President Obama's first 84 days in office has spurred to action a constituency he sought to neutralize during his campaign. Anti-abortion activists say there has been a noticable spike in recruitment activity as the president talks of defending and expanding a woman's right to choose and abortion.

Calif. Hospitals Accused of Patient Dumping


A $1.6 million settlement has been reached with two Southern California hospitals accused of improperly discharging and dumping psychiatric patients on Los Angeles' Skid Row, the city attorney's office said Wednesday. The settlement also bars College Hospitals in Costa Mesa and Cerritos from transporting homeless psychiatric patients to downtown shelters, City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo's office said.
