Sotomayor rooted in abortion rights
A Catholic pro-life group is expressing concern over past work President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor did with a legal group that supports partial-birth abortion and opposes even modest restrictions on abortion.
Although Judge Sotomayor has not issued any significant decisions dealing with the issue of abortion, the American public is getting some hints as to how she might rule in such cases. Last week, Sotomayor told Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) that she had never thought about whether unborn children are entitled to any rights.
In addition, The Washington Times recently reported that Judge Sotomayor participated for 12 years in the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund, and was once the chairman of its litigation committee.
Fidelis president Brian Burch says Sotomayor's group filed six major briefs in abortion cases, and in each one, issued a strong defense of abortion rights.
baby ultrasound"In one case, they practically asked the court to read FOCA, the Freedom of Choice Act, into the Constitution. And in another case, the brief said this, they 'oppose any efforts to overturn or in any way restrict the rights recognized in Roe v. Wade,'" he explains. "Again, this is the Puerto Rican Legal Defense fund, but this is a group -- Judge Sotomayor participated on their board for 12 years. She was their head, for a period of time, of their litigation committee, and she was clearly involved in their efforts."
Burch says given her participation in the Puerto Rican Legal Defend Fund briefs, Sotomayor has clearly thought about whether unborn children have rights, and has determined they have none.
