NHS Meltdown: Blow the Whistle on Neglect of Elderly Patients--and You Take the Fall

Our world is so upside-down. A nurse secretly filmed terrible neglect of elderly UK hospital patients--and she is sanctioned for misconduct!

From the story:

An undercover nurse who carried out secret filming to reveal the neglect of elderly patients on a hospital ward was found guilty of misconduct. The Nursing and Midwifery Council ruled that Margaret Haywood, 58, had prioritised the filming of the BBC Panorama programme and not fulfilled her obligations as a nurse.

The Undercover Nurse programme, screened in July 2005, showed poor conditions at the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton. But chair of the panel, Linda Read, said that Ms Haywood "suspended her obligations ... to protect and support the health of individual patients" by making the film.

Study of iPS Cells Draws Nearer to Finding Cures

Discovered by scientist Shinya Yamanaka, the method creates stem cells without using and destroying human embryos. By studying cells created from people with inherited disorders, scientists are observing, in ways never before possible, how diseases progress and react to treatments, said Doug Melton, a Harvard University researcher.

'Pluripotent' Stem Cell (iPS) Research is Not the Usual 'Adult' Stem Cell Research

An "exciting" new method of producing human "stem cells" to cure Parkinson's and many other debilitating diseases was recently announced as "breaking news" on U-tube (Dr. Oz to Oprah and Michael J Fox: "The stem cell debate is dead". The video proceeded to be passed around the world at the speed of light. The new research explained by Dr. Oz to Oprah in this video is referred to as "induced pluripotent stem cell" research (iPS research). As Dr. Oz noted, an adult human cell (e.g., a patient's own skin cell) can be transformed or induced from a very differentiated state back to a relatively less differentiated state to form an "embryo-like" human cell that is "pluripotent" (capable of forming most of the cells, tissues and organs of an adult human being). These new iPS human cells could then possibly be urged to develop forward to produce more mature differentiated human cells for therapeutic purposes. But three things are important to distinguish before iPS research is so enthusiastically embraced as an "ethical alternative to human embryonic stem cell research".

Birth Control Pills Linked to Lupus Risk

Women taking birth control pills, especially those who have just started taking them, may face an increased risk of developing the autoimmune disease lupus, a new study suggests. Although the link between lupus and oral contraceptives has been debated for some time, this new study adds weight to earlier studies -- including the Nurses' Health Study -- that have shown a link between oral contraceptives and lupus, the study authors said.

City to Pay Damages to Pro-Life Missionaries

The city (Findlay, OH) will not appeal a federal court ruling that determined Findlay's permit policy used to shut down an anti-abortion demonstration was unconstitutional. City Law Director Dave Hackenberg said that although he favored appealing the ruling, the city's insurance carrier said the cost of an appeal is likely to exceed the amount of damages Findlay must pay Missionaries to the Preborn. The out-of-state group tried to hold a demonstration July 31, 2007, at Tiffin Avenue and Bright Road, but Findlay police told the demonstrators to disband, on orders of the mayor.

Obama: Rescuing Dogs and Rending Babies

What a society talks about -- and what it fails to -- both speak volumes about it. And lately, the news has been replete with stories about the Obama’s new canine acquisition, a Portuguese water dog the first family has fittingly named Bo. Yet while the little curly-haired purebred is creating a tempest in a teapot -- because Barack Obama said during the campaign that he intended to get a “rescued” dog, such as one from a shelter -- few talk about a type of rescue to which Obama won’t even pay lip service. Of course, it certainly is fashionable to lament the plight of abandoned animals, and for sure, no humane person wants to see any of God’s creatures suffer needlessly. Yet, shouldn’t this sublime compassion extend to His children as well? I speak of abortion.
