Notre Dame Head Stands by Obama Invitation The president of the University of Notre Dame is rejecting criticism by Catholics of an invitation to U.S. President Barack Obama to give a commencement speech. The school and the White House announced Friday Obama would deliver the commencement address at Notre Dame's graduation ceremony May 17, and would receive an honorary degree. In an interview with The Observer, university President Father John Jenkins said the school doesn't "foresee circumstances" that would lead it to withdraw the invitation. Jenkins noted that presidents from both major parties have spoken to Notre Dame graduating classes. Randall Terry, Founder of Operation Rescue (who converted to the Catholic Church during the Easter Triduum in 2006) states: "The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is murder. She actually uses that word: 'murder.' (Evangelium Vitae, 58) Therefore, Obama supports the murder of the innocent by abortion. To honor Obama with this platform is a slap in the face of the millions of lives that have been dispatched by abortion, and makes a mockery of our Faith. http://www.earnedmedia.org/sftj0323.htm Abortionist's Trial Begins in Kansas The trial of one of the nation's few late-term abortion providers began Monday with defense attorneys trying to cast doubt on whether the doctor intentionally broke a state law requiring that an independent physician sign off on the procedure. Dan Monnat, a defense attorney for Dr. George Tiller, told jurors in his opening statement that Tiller relied on advice from the state medical board's director and one of his lawyers when he used Dr. Kristin Neuhaus as a second opinion for some abortions. Tiller is charged with 19 misdemeanors alleging he failed to obtain a second opinion for some late-term abortions in 2003 from a physician with whom he had no legal or financial relationship. http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=45542 Group Funded by Development and Peace Supports Mexico City's Abortion on Demand Law Executive Secretary admits group supports availability of abortion, does not recognize the right to life of the unborn LifeSiteNews has learned that a group funded by the Catholic bishops' Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is a supporter and defender of Mexico City's abortion law, which legalizes and guarantees abortion on demand during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. "The law that permits the legal interruption of pregnancy in the Federal District [Mexico City] represents an advance for the human rights of women," declares the "All Rights for Everyone Network" (Red Todos los Derechos para Todos) in a statement released April 24, 2008 in the name of its 58 members. |
