Conceron over Human Trials with Embryonic Stem Cells

Concern expressed re: human trials, embryonic stem cells

A Christian bioethicist says the first FDA-approved human trials using embryonic stem cells are cause for alarm.

Medical ResearchLast month, the Food and Drug Administration approved human trials using embryonic stem cells. While many researchers rejoiced over that announcement, other scientists are concerned.

Dr. Kathy McReynolds, director of public policy at the Christian Institute on Disability, says of the three types of stem-cell research -- adult, embryonic, and umbilical -- embryonic is by far the most costly, least useful, and most destructive.

"For us, we find morally objectionable then, embryonic stem-cell research because it destroys the life of a human person," she points out. "And also, when it comes to adult stem cells, there have been [sic] study after study done where adult stem cells have been used successfully in treating patients with a broad range of illnesses."

Dr. McReynolds also points out that not one single researcher has tested a therapy using embryonic stem cells in a human patient because of the risk factor.
