An ethically produced vaccine for swine flu

An ethically produced vaccine for swine flu

A pro-life organization says a new swine flu vaccine has been made using ethical cell lines.

The World Health Organization has recently announced that the swine flu could hit pandemic proportions later this year. Since then the Swiss-based pharmaceutical company Novartis has announced it has a new swine flu vaccine available. According to an Associated Press report, the new flu vaccine is the first to be produced in a cell culture rather than through the traditional chick embryo method.

Debi Vinnedge, executive director of Children of God for Life, addresses the ethics issue.

"Some of these companies are using an aborted fetal cell line," she points out, "and this is raising a great deal of concern -- because we're worried when vaccines come out how will we know which one is morally produced and which one's not."

According to Vinnedge, Novartis is using an ethical cell culture derived from a canine kidney cell process. Thirty countries are using Novartis for their swine flu vaccine supply. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has placed a $289 million order with Novartis.

When any type of vaccine is administered, it is difficult to determine if it was derived from an ethical line, says Vinnedge. She adds that her organization has looked into a number of vaccines and has posted on their website whether they are derived from ethical lines.
