Michigan Has Opportunity to Vote on Embryonic Stem-Cell Research

The Catholic bishop of Lansing has rebuked Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm for her endorsement of a ballot proposal that would expand destructive embryonic stem-cell research in the state.

"As a Catholic, I can say to be pro-cure is to be pro-life," the Democratic governor said last weekend.

The Most Rev. Earl Boyea took issue with her comments, saying, "Of course, Catholics and all other responsible citizens will continue to seek cures for disease and injury. But to imply that Proposal 2 is a valid expression of Catholic principles is shocking. Nothing could be further from the truth."

Lawsuit: Taxes Illegally Funding Abortions In Colorado

A lawsuit filed in Denver District Court on Wednesday contends that two nonprofits used state taxpayer dollars to fund abortions, which would be a violation of the Colorado Constitution. Mark Hotaling, plaintiff in the lawsuit, said contracts showed Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and Boulder Valley Women's Health got $4.5 million each over the course of last year and 2008. And he said that money is going toward funding abortions. "This is nothing more than an abortionist's shell game," said Hotaling, who describes himself as a private citizen. "Somebody has to stand up for the will of the people and the constitution."

Board Seeks To Block Suit Over Stem Cell Research Funding

An attorney for the state urged a judge Wednesday to dismiss a lawsuit by opponents of embryonic stem cell research seeking to block funding to Missouri's Life Sciences Research Board. Missouri Roundtable for Life filed suit earlier this year to bar this year's $21 million for the life sciences board, which distributes the money as research grants. Critics of embryonic stem cell research worry the money could be used to support the type of scientific investigation they oppose.

Neb. Gov. Calls Special Session 'To Fix' Child Dumping Law

Nebraska's governor is calling a special session of the legislature to fix the state's unique safe-haven law, which allows parents to abandon children as old as 18. Gov. Dave Heineman said in a statement released before a news conference that the session would begin Nov. 14. Heineman said legislation will be introduced which has already been agreed to by most of the state's 49 lawmakers. It would amend the law so it applies only to infants up to 3 days old. Nebraska's safe-haven law is the only one in the country that lets anyone leave a child as old as 18 at a state-licensed hospital without fear of prosecution for the abandonment.http://apnews.myway.com/article/20081029/D94492B80.html
