Congressional fight brewing over defunding Planned Parenthood, Hyde protections in Obamacare replacement

A draft of the Obamacare repeal bill was leaked to Politico last week. It would defund Planned Parenthood, "which could be an obstacle if the bill gets to the Senate," Politico writer Paul Demko predicted.

Pro-life groups have called on Congress to redirect money from scandal-ridden Planned Parenthood to federally qualified community health centers that don't commit abortions. The Susan B. Anthony List is running an ad on FOX & Friends and MSNBC’s Morning Joe exposing Planned Parenthood's abortion-centric focus.

What is Planned Parenthood Really About? by Susan B. Anthony List...

Study find embryo develops even outside mom’s womb, destroys the case for abortion

According to a recent study, titled “Self-organization of the human embryo in the absence of maternal tissues,” human embryos from the earliest stages of life can direct their own development—in or out of the womb.  Why is this important? Here’s how Dumitru, who is a fifth-year M.D./Ph.D. candidate at Dartmouth, explains it:

“As scientists, my colleagues must concede that embryos are made up of living cells, but they don’t accept the embryo as a living organism. If the early embryo is ‘just a clump of cells,’ then you can justify abortion. By this logic, it’s not an autonomous being, and it’s definitely not a human person yet. It’s just a few cells growing in the mother’s body, and so the mother can choose to get rid of those cells if she wants to.”

The problem for this view, Dumitru writes, is that so-called “clumps,” whether in a uterus or in a lab, don’t behave like clumps of cells. Instead, they appear to act independently, or autonomously, of any signals from the mother’s body, whether in or out of the womb. And “clumps” don’t do that.

"Big Abortion" Wants the Dangerous Pregnancy-Destroying Drug Mifepristone (RU-486) Sold in Local Pharmacies

Dr. Thomas Price, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, please take note. Your U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will soon be cooperating (conspiring) with abortion activists to relax important health regulations so that America’s only approved abortion regimen can be sold by local drug stores. In fact, the process may well be underway as I write.

Big Abortion’s aggressive push for evermore abortion, despite great health concerns for the mother (not to mention the baby), appears to know few bounds. Mifepristone, also known as RU-486, is incontrovertibly an embryo and fetal-destructive chemical. Mifepristone (also, Mifeprex®) blocks the chemical action of progesterone, the key hormone that drives pregnancy forward. Mifepristone is taken with a second drug, misoprostol (Cytotec), which causes uterine-emptying contractions when taken by a pregnant woman. This two-drug abortion regimen was first approved by the FDA in 2000.

There are many details related to the distribution of this regimen, but the key points to note are that access to the mifepristone itself is still pretty tightly controlled. The current 2016 regulations for the mifepristone regimen do not allow it to be sold in pharmacies. Rather, mifepristone may be distributed only by certified healthcare providers (originally, it had to be a physician). Such providers must have the ability to assess the duration of the pregnancy accurately, be able to diagnose ectopic pregnancies, be able to get the patient to surgical intervention in case of an incomplete abortion or severe bleeding, and, finally, must have read the prescribing information about the regimen. Clearly this sort of patient assessment cannot take place at pharmacies. The regimen may not be prescribed after the 70th day of pregnancy (LMP).

ACTION ALERT - Obamacare Repeal and Replacement

Congress has just returned to Washington after a recess last week.  National Right to Life expects committees to begin drafting budget reconciliation legislation, which may contain the following:

1. Language to repeal some or all of Obamacare
2. Elements of healthcare replacement and
3. Language to defund Planned Parenthood

Action:

It is urgent that you reach out to your Republican pro-life lawmakers to urge that any healthcare replacement legislation must explicitly exclude abortion coverage.

Our Republican pro-life Congressmen in Illinois are:

CD  6 – Rep. Peter Roskam 202-225-4561
CD 12 – Rep. Michael Bost 202-225-5661
CD 13 – Rep. Rodney Davis 202-225-2371
CD 14 – Rep. Randy Hultgren 202-225-2976
CD 15 – Rep. John Shimkus 202-225-5271
CD 16 – Rep. Adam Kinzinger 202-225-3635
CD 18 – Rep. Darin LaHood 202-225-6201

Don’t know who your Congressman is?  Click here to find your Congressman.

Tell your lawmakers:

• Taxpayer's money must not be used to purchase insurance plans that cover abortion.

• Insurers must not be mandated to cover abortion and there must be conscience protections for health care providers.

• They should retain employer paid health insurance and keep it fully untaxed so that Americans who have employer-based insurance have continued access to quality healthcare, rather than rationed more each.

How America’s Largest Abortion Provider Is Now a ‘Fashion Statement’

Emma Stone wore a gold Planned Parenthood pin during the Oscars
Emma Stone
It happened at the Globes, New and, now, the Oscars: America’s largest abortion provider is becoming a “fashion statement.” And, in addition to entertainment news and women’s magazines, the broadcast networks are beginning to notice the trend.

Following Sunday evening’s 89th Academy Awards ceremony, NBC anchor Natalie Morales reported on the red carpet “glitz and the glamour” that “was also mixed with politics.”

“Along with fashion statements,” Morales stressed Monday during Today, “there were plenty of political statements.” For proof, she pointed to La La Land actress Emma Stone’s support of Planned Parenthood.

“Emma Stone wore a gold Planned Parenthood pin on her golden gown,” she said, before noting additional Hollywood names bolstering other organizations like GLAAD and the ACLU with fashion choices.

Illinois Lawmakers Push for Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

Life leaders are warning that the number of abortions will dramatically increase in Illinois if House Bill 40 becomes law. They say the measure is a response on the state level to efforts in Congress to end the $430-million dollar annual taxpayer subsidy to Planned Parenthood.

The AMA should stand firm against assisted suicide

American Medical Association (AMA) sign
There are conflicting reports about whether the American Medical Association (AMA) is considering abandoning its longtime position in opposition to physician-assisted suicide and going “neutral.” It is important to realize how vital it is that the AMA not change.

The AMA’s longtime stance has been, in part:

Physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose serious societal risks. Instead of engaging in assisted suicide, physicians must aggressively respond to the needs of patients at the end of life. Physicians: (a) Should not abandon a patient once it is determined that cure is impossible. (b) Must respect patient autonomy. (c) Must provide good communication and emotional support. (d) Must provide appropriate comfort care and adequate pain control. -AMA Principles of Medical Ethics: I,IV”

Both the national AMA and state medical societies’ opposition to assisted suicide have been instrumental in stopping the spread of these dangerous laws. In fact, when the Vermont and California medical societies took neutral positions, it was a major stumbling block to the efforts in the legislature to block legalization.

Assisting suicide is now legal in Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, and California, and the practice may have some legal protection in the state of Montana. Additionally, assisted suicide set to take effect shortly in the District of Columbia , absent action by Congress.

It is more important now than ever for the AMA to keep its strong position.

“Jane Roe” Tells True Story Behind Roe v. Wade

Norma McCorvey Says “Pure and simple. I lied”

Editor’s note. Norma McCorvey, the “Jane Roe” of Roe v. Wade, passed away on Saturday. The following is her January 21, 1998, testimony given to the Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution, Federalism and Property Rights.

Norma McCorvey, the “Jane Roe” of Roe v. Wade
Norma McCorvey
Good morning. My name is Norma McCorvey. I’m sorry to admit that I’m the Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade.

The affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court didn’t happen the way I said it did, pure and simple. I lied! Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffey needed an extreme case to make their client look pitiable. Rape seemed to be the ticket. What made rape even worse? A gang rape! It all started out as a little lie, but my little lie grew and became more horrible with each telling.

Not only did I lie, but I was lied to. I did not come to the Supreme Court on behalf of a class of women. I wasn’t pursuing any legal remedy for my unwanted pregnancy. I did not go to the federal courts for relief. I met with Sarah Weddington to find out how I could obtain an abortion. She and Linda Coffey said they didn’t know where to get one. Sarah already had an abortion but she lied to me just like I lied to her! She knew where to get one, obviously, but I was of no use to her unless I was pregnant. Sarah and Linda were looking for somebody, anybody, to use to further their own agenda. I was their most willing dupe.

Since all these lies succeeded in dismantling every state’s protection of the unborn, I think it’s fair to say that the entire abortion industry is based on a lie.

Here’s the truth of what I saw in the abortion industry.

I saw procedure rooms where sanitation and hygiene were after-thoughts. I worked with a doctor who operated on women while he was barefoot. I’ve worked in the clinics where drug use was rampant among clinic workers. I’ve had a doctor ask me to lie about the age of a fetus so he could charge more money for an abortion. One foreign-born doctor’s entire line of so-called counseling went like this: “You want an abortion, I give you abortion.”

But the most terrible of all, I saw women who were emotionally and physically scarred by their visit to an abortion clinic. They often came asking us if it was a baby, and more often than not, they were lied to and told no. “It’s a product of conception,” we’d say, or “it’s just a few missed periods, that’s all.”

One of my most harrowing experiences was in 1991. I was working behind the desk at an abortion clinic when a woman who was about six months pregnant walked into our office.

“You’re in the wrong place, honey,” I said. “The Ob-Gyn is down the hall. This is the place for abortions.”

“Oh no, I’m in the right place,” she said.

“But you’re showing,” I protested.

Her tone was insistent. “I know what I want, and what I want is an abortion.”

I felt terrible. When situations like these arose, I felt responsible. I had signed the affidavit which ultimately made this woman’s abortion legal. It was my pseudonym, Jane Roe, which had been used to create the “right” to abortion out of legal thin air. But Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffey never told me that what I was signing would allow women to come up to me 15, 20 years later and say, “Thank you for allowing me to have my five or six abortions. Without you, it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Sarah never mentioned women using abortions as a form of birth control. We talked about truly desperate and needy women, not women already wearing maternity clothes.

I finally grew tired of the lies and deception and decided to come out and tell the truth. My eyes were opened after I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart and then took my first objective look at a fetal development chart. When the facts are clearly laid out, even a four-year-old child can see that it’s a baby.

Our country has lived with legalized abortion for 25 years now. From personal experience, I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that our experiment with legal abortion is an utter failure.

Instead of supporting organizations such as Planned Parenthood with taxpayer money, we should support local crisis pregnancy centers who provide women with options other than killing their children. Younger women need the advice and guidance of their parents, yet the abortion lobby is trying to separate parents and children by fighting against parental consent laws. Women need to be fully informed. Doctors have a financial interest in a woman choosing abortion, so informed-consent laws are crucial to protect the patients’ interests. Believe me, I’ve seen first-hand how inadequate the counseling is.

Finally, certainly we can all agree that something so extreme as partial-birth abortions should be stopped immediately. I call upon President Clinton to stop vetoing a bill which would protect these viable children. He has single-handedly allowed this horror to continue.

I am dedicated to spending the rest of my life undoing the law that bears my name. It is my sincere prayer that there be no 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I would like nothing more than to have this law overturned, either by an act of Congress or a reversal in the Supreme Court.

Thank you.

National Right to Life Mourns Death of Norma McCorvey

Norma McCorvey. Known as “Jane Roe” in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade
Norma McCorvey
The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates, joined with right-to-life advocates nationwide in mourning the death of pro-life activist Norma McCorvey. Known as “Jane Roe” in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, McCorvey became an outspoken advocate for the right-to-life cause. McCorvey died at her assisted-living facility in Texas. She was 69.

The following statement may be attributed to Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life:

While pro-abortion advocates used Norma McCorvey to advance their efforts to legalize abortion in the early 1970s, she spent the last half of her life attempting to right the terrible wrong that the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions legalizing abortion visited upon the country. Norma became an outspoken advocate for protecting the lives of mothers and their unborn children, speaking at right-to-life events across the country, including the National Right to Life convention. Norma McCorvey was a friend and valued ally in the fight for life and she will be deeply missed.

Suit challenges Illinois law forcing pro-abortion speech

Pregnancy Resource Center
Illinois passed a law that requires the staff of pro-life centers to tell their clients that abortion is an alternative to saving their babies. In addition, the law stipulates that the staff must provide information about the abortion-provider with the cheapest price.

Conversely, abortion clinics are not required to refer abortion-minded women to pro-life centers to keep their babies or to consider adoption.

Practically speaking, the requirements force the pregnancy centers to act in a manner that is contrary to the pro-life mission and, in essence, to act as a referral. As a result, Thomas More Society attorney Thomas Olp has filed suit on behalf of 18 pro-life centers.

House passes measure to nullify last-minute gift from Obama to Planned Parenthood

H. J. Res. 43
The House of Representatives voted 230-188 to nullify an 11th hour Obama rule preventing states from redirecting Title X funds away from Planned Parenthood.

H. J. Res. 43, sponsored by Rep. Diane Black (R-TN), would use the Congressional Review Act to address Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services’ regulation designed to prevent states from redirecting Title X funds away from unsuitable organizations such as Planned Parenthood. The measure now goes to the Senate.

The last minute gift to Planned Parenthood took effect on January 18–literally with just two days left in Obama’s presidency.
