Selective Abortions, Birth Restrictions Continue to Distort China’s Gender Ratio

Sex-selective abortions linked to China's "one-child" policy along with a traditional preference for boys have resulted in dramatically skewed male-female ratios in the world's most populous country that are likely to persist for decades.

A new study analyzing 2005 census data found that in that year alone, more than 1.1 million more boys than girls were born. In 2005, there were 32 million more males than females under the age of 20.

Researchers in China and Britain recorded a national ratio in the one- to four-year-old age group of 124 boys to 100 girls. In some provinces, the ratio was even more unbalanced, exceeding 140:100.

The international norm is 103-107 boys for every 100 girls.

"Sex selective abortion accounts for almost all the excess males," said the study, which was published Friday in the British Medical Journal.

Introduced in the late 1970s, China's birth limitation policy generally restricts couples to having one child. Exceptions are made in certain cases, including one that allows ethnic minorities or couples living in rural areas to have a second child if their firstborn is a girl.

When the researchers examined statistics relating to second births, they found an even higher ratio – 143 boys to 100 girls overall, and higher in some provinces, peaking at 192:100 in Jiangsu, a relatively prosperous coastal province.

The stark figures for second births, in the words of one definitive 2004 report on China's demographics, reflects "the desperation of couples who didn't produce a son the first time around."

Chinese authorities say the population control policy is enforced by means of financial incentives and punitive fines ("social compensation fees"), but evidence of forced abortions and sterilizations carried out at the behest of population control program officials has frequently emerged over the years.

The Bush administration from 2002 withheld funding for the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA), citing its work in China, in line with U.S. law that prohibits funding for any agency that "supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization." The UNFPA denied that its work in China supported coercive measures. President Obama this year reversed the policy.

The one-child policy is an aggravating factor in a society where boys are traditionally preferred for cultural reasons – they are believed to bring honor to their ancestors – and for practical ones – they are seen as more likely to be able to provide for elderly parents in a country that has a rapidly graying population and few welfare services for retirees.

Demographers have warned that China could face massive social upheaval in the coming years, as growing numbers of young men are unable to find women to marry. Already, the State Department has cited a reported rise in cross-border trafficking of women and girls into China from south-east Asia and elsewhere in recent years.

Concerned about the gender imbalance, Beijing in 2000 launched an awareness campaign aimed at discouraging a preference for boys. According to reports in Chinese media, the "care for girls" drive entailed small loans for families with only daughters to help with schooling and training in income-generating skills, and lectures for grandparents, especially in rural areas, aimed at countering a bias against girls.

In 2002, the government enacted population control legislation that outlawed the use of ultrasound scans to determine gender and so facilitate sex-selective abortions. Statistics suggest the law is widely flouted, however.

Planned Parenthood's Annual Report Shows Record Net Assets, Increased Abortions

(Correction: This story as first published reported that the Planned Parenthood Federation of America had $1.014 billion in profits in 2007-08 when, in fact, the organization had that amount in net assets.)

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards (AP Photo)

The Planned Parenthood Federation of American released its annual report for 2007-2008 last week, revealing record net assets of $1.014 billion and an increase of 15,560 more abortions in 2007 than the previous year.* The American taxpayer also contributed more than ever before, with $349.6 million of Planned Parenthoods funding coming from government grants and contracts.

The report says that in 2006 Planned Parenthood clinics performed 289,750 abortions and in 2007 the number was 305,310.

Those numbers reflect the continual increase of abortions performed each year by Planned Parenthood, according to Tom McClusky, vice president of the Family Research Council's legislative arm, Action. He told CNSNews.com that since 1977 -- not counting referrals to other clinics -- Planned Parenthood's clinics account for 4.8 million abortions.

Several interview requests by CNSNews.com to Planned Parenthood by phone and voice mail to its New York and Washington, D.C., offices were not granted by press time.  The annual report is upbeat in its assessment of Planned Parenthood, the Obama administration and the struggling economy.

"As we write this letter to proudly review the important work of Planned Parenthood over the past year, it is in the midst of enormous optimism about the new direction of our country and new opportunities to make lasting change in the lives of women and families, here and around the globe," says the letter that introduces the report and is signed by Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, and Elena Marks, chairwoman.

"Planned Parenthood and our affiliates reach every corner of America and we are an essential community institution in every state.  And in these uncertain and difficult economic times, women and men increasingly are turning to us as a trusted, affordable health care provider."

The report states that abortion accounts for 3 percent of the services Planned Parenthood provides, with contraceptives making up the majority at 36 percent. However, "Emergency Contraceptive Kits," which will induce an abortion if a woman who is pregnant takes the pill, numbered more than 1.4 million in 2007.

The report also states that, in 2007, the number of adoptions increased 100 percent and that abortions grew "by a little more than 5 percent" -- the percentage that translates into the more than 15,000 more abortions Planned Parenthood performed in 2007 than in 2006.

McClusky said that while there was an increase from 2,410 adoption referrals in 2006 compared with 4,912 in 2007, the increase in an exception, with very low numbers reported in previous years -- 1,414 in 1998 and none reported in 2005.

Although federal law prohibits federal dollars being used for abortions, the report does not provide the details on how the more than $300 million it receives from taxpayers is used. It shows that, aside from federal funding, Planned Parenthood earned more than $374 million from its clinics, which provide abortions, and $186 million in "contributions and bequests."

According to the report, Planned Parenthood clinics operating around the globe earned $6.9 million -- a figure that is likely to increase since Obama reversed the Mexico City Policy on his third day in office. The policy, put into place by President Ronald Reagan at an international summit in Mexico in 1984, prohibited federal funds being given to non-governmental organizations operating abroad that performed or promoted abortion.

The policy was reversed by President Bill Clinton and reinstated when George W. Bush was elected president.

According to public records, Planned Parenthood contributed more than $10 million dollars to Obama's campaign, during which the president pledged to the organization that "the first thing I will do" if elected would be to sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act, or FOCA, which would strike down all state and federal laws limiting abortion across the nation.

To date, the act, first proposed by the U.S. Senate in 2004, has not been reintroduced in the 111th Congress.

The report is forthcoming about Planned Parenthood's global ambitions, although its summary of services does not say which are for domestic clinics as opposed to clinics abroad.

"Our commitment to reproductive health and freedom extends around the world," the report states. "With the help of our international partners, we reached 935,000 individuals in 20 developing countries, and we supported their vital work with more than $2.5 million in grants last year alone."

"Planned Parenthood is the leading sexual and reproductive health care advocate and provider, with 93 years under our belt," the reports introductory letter concludes.  "And in the near future, we will play a unique role in helping to shape the health agenda for the new administration. None of this would be possible without the dedication and determination of Planned Parenthood volunteers, activists, supporters, and staff -- the Planned Parenthood family."

* Planned Parenthood's annual report includes data from its fiscal year, which ended on June 30, 2008.

Adult Stem Cells Show Promise for Damaged Corneas

Stem cells collected from human corneas restore transparency when injected into eyes that are scarred and hazy, according to experiments conducted in mice by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Their study will be published in the journal Stem Cells and appears online today.

The findings suggest that ethical cell-based therapies might be an effective way to treat human corneal blindness and vision impairment due to the scarring that occurs after infection, trauma and other common eye problems. The Pitt corneal stem cells were able to remodel scar-like tissue back to normal.

"Several kinds of experiments indicated that the human cells were alive and making (proteins), and that the tissue had rebuilt properly," said senior investigator James L. Funderburgh, Ph.D.

The study comes on the heels of President Barack Obama's decision to open the door for more federal funding for destructive embryonic stem-cell research, which has not led to a single human treatment.

Americans Support Medical Professionals' Freedom of Conscience

A whopping 87 percent of American adults believe it is important to "make sure health care professionals in America are not forced to participate in procedures and practices to which they have moral objections."

The poll, conducted by WomanTrend on behalf of the Christian Medical Association, found support for that statement among 78 percent of those who consider themselves "pro-choice," and 80 percent of those who voted for President Barack Obama.

The results were presented today in Washington, D.C., as doctors, nurses, pharmacists and medical students gathered to request a meeting with the White House over their right to practice medicine according to their morals.

"Forcing doctors, nurses, pharmacists or others in the health care field to violate their conscience will ultimately jeopardize patients," said Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America.

"Imagine the barbarities that would be committed if providers were not personally committed to strong moral standards. Protecting the right of providers to follow their conscience is crucial to our own health."

President George W. Bush put regulations in place in December to reinforce federal laws that protect medical professionals from being forced to participate in abortion and other anti-life practices. Obama wants to overturn them.

The 30-day public-comment period on the effort to abolish the regulations ends Thursday.

Planned Parenthood: Annual Budget Still Over $1 Billion; More Preborn Children Killed

"For decades now, Planned Parenthood has operated the most proficient killing machine in the United States," said Douglas R. Scott, Jr., president of Life Decisions International (LDI). "And for decades, the machine has killed more preborn children than the year before."

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) has released its Annual Report for 2007-2008. The behemoth admits that it slaughtered 305,310 preborn human beings in 2007 alone (up nearly 5.4 percent from 2006), which generated an estimated $130 million. Only 4,912 Planned Parenthood customers were referred to adoption agencies.

PPFA claims to prevent the "need" for abortion while simultaneously working to increase its share of the abortion market. In 1984, it committed just over 5.5 percent of all abortions in the United States. By 2004 that figure had risen to nearly 20 percent. And Planned Parenthood's share of the lucrative market continues to rise.

PPFA sold more than 1.42 million "emergency" birth control kits in 2007 (nearly one percent fewer than in 2006). Every PPFA "clinic" dispenses "emergency" birth control. Most prescribe it over the phone and accept orders over the Internet, without an exam. In the vast majority of cases, "emergency" birth control causes an abortion, but Planned Parenthood wrongly and intentionally claims the drugs prevent conception by changing the definitions of terms that have been widely accepted for centuries.

Between 2006 and 2007, PPFA testing for sexually transmitted diseases increased by more than 11.4 percent. Last year, after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that one in four teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease, PPFA blamed abstinence education. "Abstinence education is Planned Parenthood's biggest nightmare," Scott said. "The group's hierarchy does not seem to be able to connect the dots. The more influence Planned Parenthood has with young people, the higher the rate of sexually transmitted disease. Abstinent teens do not get such diseases; abstinent teens do not become customers of Planned Parenthood." Scott said attacking abstinence education is one of Planned Parenthood's top priorities and the group is hoping President Barack Obama will end the federal abstinence program. "Planned Parenthood leaders believe that any funds not spent on their programs are essentially wasted," Scott said.

PPFA's Annual Report shows that the group generated more than $1.038 billion in Fiscal Year 2007-2008, which is an increase of nearly two percent from the previous reporting period. In Fiscal Year 2006-2007, PPFA's budget had risen more than 11 percent over the previous Fiscal Year.

PPFA's income includes a hefty and ever-increasing check from American taxpayers. In Fiscal Year 2005-2006, government funding increased by nearly 10.8 percent over the previous reporting period. In Fiscal Year 2006-2007, taxpayers gave another 10.3 percent. In Fiscal Year 2007-2008, taxpayers gave nearly 3.8 percent more to Planned Parenthood, bringing the total to $349.6 million. The most recent figures show that almost 33.7 percent of PPFA's annual revenue comes from taxpayers.

"This 'not-for-profit' goliath ends every fiscal year with millions of dollars in 'excess revenue over expenses,'" Scott said, "which is known to regular people as 'profit.'" The 'excess' for 2003-2004 alone was $63 million. In 2004-2005 alone, the excess was $55.8 million. In 2005-2006 alone, the amount was a staggering $114.8 million. Planned Parenthood confesses to having an additional $85 million in "excess revenue" in its most recent report.

On June 30, 2008, PPFA had net assets valued at $1.014.4 billion, of which $460.2 was unrestricted and another $147.2 million was temporarily restricted. "This is essentially a savings account," Scott explained. "The money is sitting in a bank and drawing interest that will further advance Planned Parenthood's ungodly agenda. Despite these huge sums, the corporation's hierarchy incessantly claims to need more and more tax dollars," Scott said.

"Planned Parenthood's numbers are not nearly what its leaders would have liked to see," Scott said. "The Pro-Life Movement can be proud of itself for its ongoing and successful efforts in exposing Planned Parenthood's true agenda. The more public 'black eyes' Planned Parenthood receives; the harder it will be for the group to reach its goals." Scott said PPFA's greatest ally has always been public ignorance of its agenda and activities. "Most people think of Planned Parenthood as nothing more than a 'family planning' organization. We are showing the world that it is much more than that; and far more sinister."

An affiliate of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), PPFA describes itself as the world's oldest and largest "reproductive health care" business. It operates 97 affiliates and nearly 880 birth control centers throughout the United States. Founded in 1916 by elitist and eugenics advocate Margaret Higgins Sanger, PPFA began as the nation's first birth control facility. PPFA argues that "everyone has the right to choose when or whether to have a child..." It pushes for laws and constitutional amendments that guarantee "reproductive freedom," a phrase encompassing unlimited birth control and abortion for everyone, no matter how young.

An in-depth analysis of PPFA's Annual Report appears in the Spring 2009 edition of LDI's periodical, Special Reports, which should be available online within the next several days.

Abortionists Ignore Real Needs of Women

They do not touch on the root causes that drive women to abortion clinics.

Abortion businesses speak in a compassionate-sounding way about women who are "driven" to abortion — by the loss of a job, lack of health care, low income or lack of support from the father of the child — but they do nothing to address the root causes that lead these women to think abortion is their only option.

Several news reports have documented the rise in abortions as the economy has soured.

Paula Gianino, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region, said the recession clearly was a factor behind the rising abortion numbers late last year at the six clinics she oversees, Newsday reported.

Planned Parenthood of Illinois said that in January it performed the highest number of abortions in its history, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Feminists for Life (FFL) believes women deserve better.

"Abortion providers have failed to connect women to the help they need and want," FFL President Serrin Foster wrote to supporters. "We mourn with these women, and for the children they will never meet."

Foster said abortion doesn't solve any real problems.

"These women still face the same economic strife," she said. "They (go) back to work for the same employers who didn't accommodate their needs. They (go) home to the same husbands or partners who wouldn't or couldn't provide the support they needed and deserved."

Foster said abortionists talk about women who are poor and in need of prenatal care, but life advocates can provide real help.

"You and I can tell women in need that pregnancy resource centers help lead women through the maze of available resources," she said.

State University Refuses Honorary Degree to President Obama: Catholic Notre Dame Still Plans to Honor President

Even as the University of Notre Dame has angered Catholics and pro-life advocates nationwide with its plan to bestow an honorary doctorate of laws on President Barack Obama on May 17, Arizona State University has declined to do the same when the President speaks at its commencement ceremony the prior Wednesday.

ASU spokeswoman Sharon Keeler told The Associated Press: "It's our practice to recognize an individual for his body of work, somebody who's been in their position for a long time.  His body of work is yet to come.  That's why we're not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency."

Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society, which has launched a petition protest against Notre Dame's honoring of President Obama, responded to the news saying, "If a public university can deny the President an honorary degree, then one would think that a Catholic university could do the same for much more important reasons: to uphold its Catholic mission, to obey the U.S. bishops, and to put principle over prestige."

The announcement that Notre Dame had decided to bestow an honorary degree on Obama and have him as this year's commencement speaker sparked a nationwide protest last month, due to Obama's established record on abortion and other moral issues while an Illinois state legislator, United States senator and U.S. President.

In his first 11 weeks in office, President Obama has allowed taxpayer funding for abortions and embryonic stem cell research, nominated pro-abortion Catholic Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services, announced anti-Catholic activist Anthony Picarello as an advisor on faith-based partnerships, and threatened conscience protections for Catholic healthcare workers.

Notre Dame's planned honor for President Obama has been protested by students and alumni, 29 Catholic bishops, 10 Holy Cross priests and over 250,000 concerned individuals at NotreDameScandal.com.

ND Prez Comment on USCCB Document Prohibiting Honoring Pro-Abortion Politicians

LifeSiteNews.com has obtained a copy of University of Notre Dame President Fr. John Jenkins' commentary on the U.S. Bishops Conference (USCCB) document, "Catholics in the Political Life," which was sent to Notre Dame's Board of Trustees at the beginning of this month. In the commentary Jenkins explains how he believes that the university's invitation of President Obama to be this year's commencement speaker and receive an honorary law degree is in keeping with the "letter and the spirit" of the recommendations included in the USCCB document.

The USCCB issued "Catholics in Political Life" in 2004. The document directs Catholic schools not to honor pro-abortion politicians.  Many of the 29 bishops who have so far spoken out against the scandal, including Notre Dame's Bishop John D'Arcy and USCCB President Cardinal Francis George, have indicated that the school's invitation to President Obama to speak at commencement and receive an honorary law degree was in violation of the bishops' directive.  (To view the USCCB document, go to: http://www.usccb.org/bishops/catholicsinpoliticallife.shtmlClick here for the full story

Four More Makes 29 Bishops, 10 Holy Cross Priests Condemn ND Scandal

A group of priests with the Congregation of the Holy Cross (C.S.C.), the religious order that runs the University of Notre Dame, and four more U.S. bishops have issued their condemnation of Notre Dame's decision to honor President Obama with an honorary law degree and an invitation to speak at the school's May 17 commencement.

Ten Holy Cross priests and Notre Dame alumni wrote a letter concerning the scandal to the University's Observer newspaper yesterday, requesting that fellow C.S.C. member and University president Fr. John Jenkins "revisit this matter immediately" as "failure to do so will damage the integrity of the institution and detract from all the good work that occurs at Notre Dame and from the impressive labors of its many faithful students and professors."  Both the local C.S.C. superior, and the superior general in Rome, have refused to condemn the invitation.  Click here for the full story

Group Wants Notre Dame Removed From Catholic Directory Over Obama Invite

The American Life League is calling for the University of Notre Dame to be removed from the official list of Catholic institutions after the university invited President Obama, an abortion supporter, to give the commencement address. The group, a Catholic pro-life organization, said in a statement Wednesday that removing the school from the Official Catholic Directory would cut Notre Dame off from a lot of Catholic foundation funding. "We found a tragic attitude at the University of Notre Dame -- apathy, if not hostility, toward the faith," Judie Brown, ALL president, said in the statement. "The university is backing away from the Catholic Church."   Click here for the full story

Planned Parenthood 2007-8 Report: Abortions Break 300,000 in Year, Highest-Ever Taxpayer Funding

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) has released its official 2007-2008 report, which shows that 305,310 unborn children were killed in chemical, medical, and surgical abortions by PPFA in the space of a year, up from 289,750 in 2006.  The report also reveals that the total taxpayer money received by PPFA affiliates increased to $350 million. Click here to view the report

The report boasts that the number of adoption referrals provided by Planned Parenthood increased by over 100% from 2,410 referrals in 2006 to 4,912 referrals in 2007.  This announcement comes after PPFA refrained from reporting this statistic in their past two Annual Reports.

It was widely speculated that PPFA dropped the adoption referral statistic in their past two annual reports because the number had steadily declined in prior years and the disparity between adoption referrals and abortions demonstrated how Planned Parenthood affiliates address crisis pregnancies.

However, with this increase in adoption referrals included, the total number of children referred for adoption still amounts to only 1.6% the total number of unborn children Planned Parenthood killed in the 07-08 cycle, or one third of this year's increase in abortions.  Planned Parenthood cites the number of babies offered prenatal care at 10,914, 3.5% of the number destroyed in the womb.

Despite a growing collection of data from sting operations showing Planned Parenthood employees evading the law, the total government grants and contracts received by PPFA affiliates increased from $337 million in the 2006-07 cycle to $350 million.  The number reflects grants from all government sources including state, local and federal sources.

Planned Parenthood's net revenue from all sources topped $1.038 billion, with net assets at $1.014 billion.

American Life League also issued a report March 9 of Planned Parenthood facilities in the U.S. in the year 2008. Click here to see the ALL report.

While the data ALL collected show that the Planned Parenthood Federation of America has decreased its total number of facilities, there was an increase in the total number of facilities that perform medical abortions. At the end of 2008, Planned Parenthood had a total of 844 clinics, down from 855 from the year 2007, while the number of medical-abortion-only clinics increased by 61 between 2006-8.

Pro-Life Legislation Moves Through Tennessee House

Four times, the Public Health Subcommittee in the Tennessee House has defeated a proposed constitutional amendment that would overrule a pro-abortion state Supreme Court ruling from 2000.

That changed on Tuesday, when the full Health Committee voted 20-7 in favor of the amendment. SJR 127 recently passed the Senate for a fifth time and could go to the House floor within two weeks.

After the state Supreme Court ruled that the state constitution protects the "right" to abortion, several pro-life regulations have been struck down. This amendment would reverse the court ruling and allow incremental regulations on abortion.

Crisis Pregnancy Center in Mattoon Reopens

Since the Mattoon Crisis Pregnancy Center closed almost four years ago, about 200 women each year had to drive from Mattoon to Charleston for help. But officials with the Crisis Pregnancy Centers of Eastern Illinois no longer have to give out fuel cards to Mattoon area women in need. In January, the Mattoon Crisis Pregnancy Center reopened at a new location, offering counseling on pregnancy, adoption and abortion, as well as other material assistance and instruction on life-building skills.

Christian Doctors' Group Protests Rolling Back 'Conscience' Rule

An organization of Christian physicians argued Wednesday against an impending rollback of a federal rule allowing health care workers to refuse to provide certain reproductive services, saying it's discriminatory. The Bush White House proposed the rule in August, and it was enacted January 20, the day President Obama took office. It expanded on a 30-year-old law establishing a "conscience clause" for health care professionals who don't want to perform abortions.

Nation's Oldest Abortion Clinic to Close

The nation's oldest abortion clinic, which is located in Oakland, is closing due to California's budget crisis. The Women's Choice Clinic of Oakland provided reproductive health care services for below cost. On Wednesday, the clinic's supporters announced the center is no longer seeing patients because the state has frozen payments, and has cut funding.

Competing Medical Futility Bills Introduced in Texas--One to Stop It, One to Defend it

The current Texas Futile Care law is a disgrace, permitting star chamber ethics committees to force patients off of wanted life sustaining treatment, with family given a mere 10 days to find another hospital. This often proves impossible because these are expensive patients for which to care.

The last effort to revoke the law, which appeared to have a good chance of passage, was surprisingly blocked when the Catholic bishops of Texas supported a competing bill.

Altruistic Desires Are Not the End All and Be All in Organ Donation

A very sad case in Canada is testing the ethics of organ donation at a Canadian hospital. A terminally ill baby was going to be allowed to die naturally and then after cardiac arrest, be an organ donor under the "Non Heart Beating Cadaver Donor Protocol." But the baby didn't die as planned and the donation has been called off, about which the parents are not happy. From the story:

Two-month-old Kaylee has a fatal brain condition called Joubert Syndrome, which has caused a malformation of her brain, leaving her unable to breathe without a machine when she sleeps. With no way to save their child's life and not wanting to see her suffer any longer, Kaylee's parents, Jason Wallace and Crystal Vitelli, wanted to take her off life support and donate her heart to another baby in need.

They thought Tuesday would be their last day with their daughter. Wallace said that Kaylee was expected to fall asleep in the operating room Tuesday evening and then be taken off life support. If she died within two hours, her heart would be removed for a transplant. But doctors called off the surgery when she did not fall asleep as thought.

Revealed: Obama Commencement Talking Points for University of Notre Dame Trustees

http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/images/2009c/ObamaNotreDame.jpg

LifeSiteNews.com has obtained a copy of the talking points distributed by the University of Notre Dame to its Board of Trustees to respond to the rash of criticism the school faces from Catholic bishops, leaders, laypeople, and Notre Dame alumni concerning its invitation of President Obama to be this year's commencement speaker.

An outcry erupted immediately after the school announced, and the White House accepted, an invitation to President Obama to offer the commencement address and receive an honorary law degree May 17 (To sign a petition against the invitation, go to: http://www.notredamescandal.com).

The talking points are as follows:

- Presidents from both parties have come to Notre Dame for decades to speak to our graduates.  Barack Obama will be the sixth President to speak at commencement, and the ninth to receive an honorary degree from the University.

- It's a rare thing to be able to offer your graduates a commencement address from one of the most influential figures in the world - especially as they're entering that world hoping to make it better.

- We think a visit from the President will help inspire our graduates to be active citizens - whether they agree with his politics or not.

- We knew there would be some controversy over this choice.  Frankly, I was impressed that Fr. Jenkins invited him; he's facing some criticism for this.  And I admire President Obama for accepting.  It shows he respects his audience.

- But there shouldn't be any confusion about the honorary degree.  We're honoring him as the sitting president of the United States...for his historic election, for fighting poverty, expanding health care, improving schools, seeking peace, breaking barriers of race.

- These issues are dear to the heart of Catholics and the president has elevated them, and we honor that.

- We are aware of the discussion surrounding the bishops' document, Catholics in Political Life.  The University took this document into full consideration.  We believe it allows those non-Catholics to be invited to give their views on important issues.

- We have said from the start, that this invitation does not mean we agree with all positions the President has taken.  We do not condone the President's positions on abortion and embryonic stem cell research.  We have crucial differences with him on issues of protecting human life.  Fr. Jenkins made that clear.

- But that doesn't mean we shouldn't invite him to Notre Dame.  We can never change the President's views unless he listens to us.  And how can we expect him to listen to us if we won't listen to him?

- And President Obama won't be doing all the talking. Mary Ann Glendon, the former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, will be speaking as the recipient of the Laetare Medal.

- We think having the President come to Notre Dame, see our graduates, meet our leaders, and hear a talk from Mary Ann Glendon is a good thing for the President and for the causes we care about.

Practice of Obstetrics will "Suffer" with Obama Abolition of Conscience Protections: Obstetricians Group

An international group of obstetricians and gynaecologists has formally protested plans by the US government to rescind legislation protecting the rights of conscience of doctors to refuse to participate in abortions.

http://www.holyredeemerparish.ca/images/Logos/matercare%20Inter.jpg

Dr. Robert Walley, head of MaterCare International, has warned that the practice of obstetrics in the US "will suffer" should the plans go ahead. The proposal, he writes, "is an attack on an inalienable right" and will usher in a "form of totalitarianism" that amounts to "discrimination and persecution."

In an open letter, Dr. Walley wrote, "By interfering in the freedom to practise according to conscience, the principles of autonomy of the physician and the rights of mothers will be removed."

"The practice of obstetrics in the United States will suffer as there will be a sameness of practice which will stifle further thought and progress in maternal health care."

Dr. Walley, an obstetrician with over 35 years experience in the field, denounced the abortion ideology that he said is working against the traditions of freedom of conscience at the expense of women. "The so called freedom to choose that one group of women has supposedly gained through the introduction of abortion will now be lost by all women as a consequence of their inability to consult an obstetrician whose practice is based on respect for life and on hope from its very beginning."

"It will be bought at the expense of a once noble profession."

With representatives in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland, MaterCare International is one of the few completely pro-life medical associations in the world, that offers pre- and post-natal care to mothers in developing countries.

In February, President Barack Obama indicated that his government is poised to rescind legal protections for health care workers who object to procedures, such as abortion and sterilisations, that conflict with their religious or moral beliefs. The conscience protections were one of the last acts of the Bush administration and they came into effect on January 20 of this year, the same day as President Obama's inauguration. The Bush rule was universally condemned by the abortion lobby.

Conscience rules deadline approaches

http://www.onenewsnow.com/uploadedImages/Media/Images/Cartoons/physician.jpg

President Bush put into place conscience rules to implement current law to protect medical professionals who object to performing certain services or dispensing medications that violate their religious beliefs or sense of ethics. Thursday is the deadline for public comment.

"And the more pro-life Americans that stand up for the rights of healthcare providers, the better because we know that abortion supporters who are only looking to expand the availability of abortion by trampling on the rights of healthcare providers are going to let their feelings be known," says Denise Burke, vice president of legal affairs at Americans United for Life.

She adds that it will have a negative effect on the healthcare industry.

http://www.onenewsnow.com/uploadedImages/Media/Images/Mugs/denise%20burke.jpg

"If this rule is rescinded, it will have a detrimental effect on our nation's healthcare system because we know that when you force healthcare providers to choose between their consciences and their careers, they're going to choose their conscience -- and we're going to lose qualified providers who are dramatically needed," she contends, "and we're going to discourage competent young people from entering medical school."

In the event that Obama is successful in destroying the rules, Burke believes lawsuits are likely.

Oprah's website buries Dr. Oz's 'stem cell debate is dead' statement

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/images/ppoz_oprah.jpg
Dr. Mehment Oz / Oprah Winfrey

Yesterday, Dr. Mehment Oz appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show to voice his support for adult stem cell research and to argue that “the stem cell debate is dead,” but instead of giving his statement a fair hearing, Oprah’s website buried and edited Oz’s comments.

Actor Michael J. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, was invited on the show to  talk about his struggle with Parkinson’s and his foundation’s endorsement of embryonic stem cell research (ESCR).

Fox told Oprah that he believes President Obama’s decision lifting President Bush's restrictions on ESCR was a “step in the right direction” and that “we had eight years where there was no forward progress.” The United States has to make up for a lot of lost time, Fox added.

He also empathized with ethical concerns over ESCR, but said, “I just have faith in our scientists and the research community that they’ll do this ethically and to good purpose.”

After a commercial break, Oprah introduced Dr. Oz, who is the vice-chair and professor of surgery at Columbia University, to explain how stem cells could be used to treat or cure the effects of many diseases.

To demonstrate how stem cells could be used, Oz brought out a human brain. Both Oprah and Fox laughed and joked with Oz as he discussed how stem cells would work in the brain. But Dr. Oz became more serious as he spoke about the future of embryonic stem cell research.

“Now, I’m going to say something that’s going to be a bit provocative. I think, Oprah, the stem cell debate is dead, and I’ll tell you why,” said Oz.

“The problem with embryonic stem cells is that embryonic stem cells come from embryos, like all of us were made from embryos. And those cells can become any cell in the body. But it’s very hard to control them, and so they can become cancer.”

Oprah and Fox then became visibly uncomfortable, shifting around in their chairs, as Oz explained that, contrary to Fox’s earlier testimony, incredible medical advances are being made using adult stem cells and not embryonic stem cells. He claimed that, “in the last year, we’ve made a 10 year advancement.”

Oprah responded in disbelief by saying, “In the last year we’ve advanced 10 years?” Oz explained, “we went places we never thought we would go.”

He then boldly stated that within “single digit years” the medical community could find cures for people with “Parkinson’s disease, but also diabetics and heart attack victims” by using adult stem cells.

Oprah’s website summarized Oz’s argument for adult stem cells with two short paragraphs, hidden 11 pages deep in a 13 page summary of the show:

“Thanks to recent scientific discoveries, Dr. Oz says stem cells aren’t the only solution. ‘We went to a place we never thought we would go. I can take a little bit of your skin, take those cells and get them to go back in time so they’re like they were when you were first made.’”

“Dr. Oz says these skin cells, which contain your genes and are less prone to cancer, will be the ones that are ultimately used to cure Parkinson’s. ‘I think we’re single digit years away from making a big impact in the lives of [people with] Parkinson’s disease, but also diabetics and heart attack victims,’” the website summarized.

Oprah.com not only avoided quoting Oz as saying “the stem cell debate is dead,” but carefully avoided the words “stem cell” and “embryonic’ when quoting or summarizing his remarks.

Oz did in fact say stem cells were the solution, but instead of backing ESCR, he advocated adult stem cells as the future of medical breakthroughs.

Doctors Refuse to Help Patients Kill Themselves

Doctors in Montana are refusing to cooperate with a court decision allowing physician-assisted suicide, saying their role is to care for patients, not help them kill themselves.

In December, a District Court judge ruled that physician-assisted suicide is a constitutional right. The Montana Medical Association, however, said it "does not condone the deliberate act of precipitating the death of a patient."

Congress in Honduras prohibits abortion pill

The House of Representatives in Honduras has approved a law prohibiting “the morning-after pill” as unconstitutional because of its abortifacient nature. The full Congress approved the measure which bans the purchase, sale, use and distribution of the morning-after pill.

The measure was sponsored by Liberal Party Representative Martha Lorena Alvarado and supported by a statement from the Medical College of Honduras, which pointed out the pill’s abortifacient effects.

The emergency contraceptive pill “is a hormonal bomb that acts directly in the body causing thousands of physical changes in girls, who are the ones taking it the most, 12, 14 and 16 year-old girls take it after a night of partying, making it a pharmaceutical abortion,” Alvarado said.

Bush's Plan B Abortion Pill to Be Available to Minors

The [abortifacient] contraceptive pill Plan B will be available over the counter to 17-year-olds by the end of April after a federal judge ordered the Food and Drug Administration to follow his ruling within 30 days March 23. Plan B has been available over the counter to women who are 18 and older since 2006, yet the decision to place restrictions on the dispersion of the pill was influenced by the politics of the Bush administration, not women’s safety, United States District Court Judge Edward Korman said in his 52-page ruling. Plan B is also available with a prescription. The FDA refused to comment on the Plan B 'opinion'. “We are still reviewing the judge’s decision,” FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research spokeswoman Rita Chappelle said.

Transit Buses Pulls Pro-Life Ad

http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/images/2008a/abortiontoofar.jpg

A series of abortion ads have been removed from Sarnia Transit buses following a complaint. Sarnia Transit manager Jim Stevens said the sign, which reads: “9 months. The length of time an abortion is allowed in Canada,” was posted among other advertising on six city buses. The banner ads have been removed temporarily until the complaint is reviewed, he said. St. Francis Xavier student Miranda Domingue raised the issue in a letter to The Observer. She said the city appears to be endorsing a position when it allows a controversial sign to be plastered in or on a bus.

A Medical Version of the Patriot Act?

The computerization of personal health care records is one of the showcases of the stimulus. President Obama promised: "We will make the immediate investments necessary to ensure that within five years all of America's medical records are computerized." Congress ponied up $19 billion to subsidize doctors and hospitals computerizing patient record and creating electronic health care tracking systems.

The ultimate goal of the Obama program is "the utilization of a certified electronic health record for each person in the United States by 2014," as the stimulus legislation states. But having a massive electronic database will make it far easier for the government to coerce both doctors and patients. This is a peril as bad as or worse than the Patriot Act.

Colorado contraception bill ventures into abortifacient debate

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1990000/images/_1992440_pill300.jpg

A “dangerously broad” proposed Colorado law written to protect contraception in response to a “personhood amendment” ballot measure is headed to the governor’s desk for approval. Amendment 48, a ballot measure on the 2008 Colorado ballot, would have defined a human being from the moment of conception as a person. It garnered only 26.7 percent of the vote.

The pending law, Senate Bill 225, is called the Birth Control Protection Act. It defines contraceptives as “any medically acceptable drug, device or procedure used to prevent pregnancy.”

The bill also defines “emergency contraception,” excluding from its definition RU-486, mifepristone, or “any other drug or device that induces a medical abortion.”

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains President and CEO Vicki Cowart called the bill’s approval by the state legislature a “victory” that reaffirms birth control as “basic, preventative health care.”

The Colorado Catholic Conference opposed the bill, calling it “dangerously broad and sweeping” in its definition of contraceptives. The CCC said the law could classify abortifacient drugs as contraception.

Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, a Catholic, must sign the bill if it is to become law.

Abortion: Sunshine on a rainy day or not?

We come back to asking why an abortion proponent would want abortion to be rare, a dangerously moralesque view first expressed by Bill Clinton.

http://www.jillstanek.com/safe%20legal%20rare.jpg

The Obama administration is trying to build on this. According to abortion advocate Christina Page in the Huffington Post April 7:

Some historic moments are short and sweet. That was the case last Friday with a call the White House organized on common ground in the abortion conflict. In a never before attempted event, the Obama administration merged dozens of leaders from the pro-choice and pro-life movements onto one conference call line and, wisely, muted us. …
[T]he intent is to focus on the areas in which, theoretically, both sides share a common interest. And there are many: preventing unintended pregnancy (including teen pregnancy), reducing the need for abortion, strengthening supports for struggling families with wanted pregnancies, making adoption an option as accessible as any other, and saving lives by improving maternal and child health.

Actually, not to nitpick, but as far as I know only two pro-life groups were invited on the call, Concerned Women for America and Democrats for Life.

Whatever – the dicey (pardon the pun) question for the other side is why care about "reducing the need for abortion"?

"The Emerging Brave New World" covers the gradual dehumanization of human beings that has invaded American culture

If abortion is morally neutral, even morally superior – a "blessing" and "holy work," according to new Cambridge Episcopal Divinity School pro-abort President Rev. Katherine Hancock Ragsdale – why aren't proponents working to increase the need for abortion? It makes no sense to decrease it.

Recognize this is a concession. If America is as pro-abortion as the other side likes to say, there is absolutely no reason to "reduce the need for abortion." So don't let them gloss over this point. Stick on it. Solutions can't be determined without understanding the problem. What exactly is the problem with abortion?

If they state the problems are merely financial or inconvenience, they lose, because they alienate the vast unwashed they are trying to woo by denying what the vast unwashed consistently polls it knows: Abortion is the taking of a human life.

If they admit there is a moral problem with abortion, they lose by opening a can of worms with both the public and the abortion industry. The next question obviously is, "What is the moral problem with abortion?" And they never ever want to be pinned into going there.

(And by the way, as CWA President Wendy Wright wrote me, don't use their terminology. "Say 'number' rather than 'need,' because 'need' is subjective, whereas 'number of abortions' is quantifiable," stated Wright.)

Even the title of Page's column is questionable: "The call for common ground on abortion." Why seek common ground? If our side holds the losing position, why give a whit?

Always remember, the ones seeking compromise know they are losing, and Obama knows his radical pro-abortion position is a loser.

This is why, even as Obama behind the curtain is living up to our pre-election analysis as the most pro-abortion president ever, he is still trying to conceal himself, now by attempting to pseudo-engage pro-lifers.

Obama is continuing a public relations campaign launched – successfully – prior to his election to placate those uncomfortable with abortion.

So even as we know Obama's radical pro-abortion position is a loser, we must acknowledge Obama may continue to entice the masses by subterfuge.

Our opposing worldviews on abortion and its common antecedent, sexual relations outside of marriage, are irreconcilable. We can only continue to make the irrefutable case that moral behavior is healthiest and safest.

But this position is not popular. Thousands of fallen cultures throughout history testify to this sad fact from the dust. As Dr. Laura Schlessinger recently wrote, "[I]n the overall scheme of humanity, why do so many people wish to push away the enormous protective power of moral values?"

I know I am not alone in experiencing an uncanny and increasing sense of urgency, as if we are running out of time. This means we must work ever more vigilantly to draw as many to the narrow path as we can while we can.

Remember the abortion issue is but a vehicle to show people The Way.

White House confirms it got 2 million red envelopes

President's mail worker claims letter campaign 1 of largest in 35 years

The White House mail office has confirmed it received a "deluge" of as many as 2.25 million red envelopes symbolizing the empty promise of lives snuffed out in abortion in a massive campaign that was larger than most White House mailing movements in the last 35 years.

White House mail worker "Steve" has handled letters for 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for more than three decades. Every single package and letter destined for the White House goes through his office.

Asked if he has seen a flood of red envelopes bound for the White House, Steve chuckled.

"Uh, yes," he said emphatically. "Believe me, they made it here."

Steve said while Obama has been occupied in Europe, his administration has noticed millions of red envelopes on behalf of aborted children.

"Quite frankly, there was definitely a deluge of mail coming through," he laughed. "I had to handle them all."

"I've been here 35 years, so I've seen presidents come and go," Steve told WND. "This campaign ranks up there with the big ones."

The Red Envelope Project is an idea sparked in the mind and prayers of a Massachusetts man, Christ Otto, who envisioned in January thousands of red envelopes sent to the White House, a visual expression of moral outrage over the president's position on abortion.

On the backs of the envelopes, senders wrote a message Otto composed: "This envelope represents one child who died in abortion. It is empty because that life was unable to offer anything to the world. Responsibility begins with conception."

The original project began small, but when Otto sent out an email to friends asking them to join him in the envelope effort, the symbolic gesture spread through the Internet like wildfire – eventually resulting in delivery of as many as 2.25 million red envelopes.

"Last Tuesday 2.25 million were sent all together," Otto told WND. "There were 1 million sent before that date. I keep getting e-mails, and I know that people are still sending them. This past weekend, there were at least 10,000 more sent just from churches announcing it on Sunday."

The Catholic News Agency reports that a consortium of 11 different student groups at the University of Notre Dame, in protest of the university's invitation of Barack Obama to speak at graduation, plan to hand deliver a surge of the red envelopes to the pro-abortion president when he arrives to give the commencement address in May.

Christ Otto

Otto said he expected no response from the White House.

"On Thursday their goal is to remove the conscience clause on physicians," he said. "So, they don't want any press."

However, WND was successful in confirming that the red envelopes did arrive.

Asked if he hopes President Obama will be influenced by the campaign Otto said, "I really hope that he is seeing them. I know that somebody in Washington is seeing them, for whatever that's worth. I do hope that it changes the president's heart."

He continued, "I also know that there are many people in our government – in both political parties – who believe that life and freedom are controlled by the state. They want to control who lives and who dies. So, it's not just the president, but there are lots of people in Washington who need to know that this was an important thing and that they are out of step with the people."

The Red Envelope Project has been provided with letters to cease and desist because it allegedly infringes upon trademark and copyright of another organization, but Otto said the campaign will comply with copyright issues and continue its work once the legal matters have been resolved. Details of the new campaign have not been released.

Nonetheless, Otto said the Red Envelope campaign was a resounding success.

"It has made a difference, regardless of what happened in Washington," he said. "Just the numbers of children that have been involved are huge. It's gotten a lot of people talking about the value of life. To me, that's priceless."

Pharmacists win battle in 'conscience' rights case

Court rejects officials' attempt to 'trample' faith-related protections

Pharmacists in Illinois have been granted a victory in their legal battle over their right of conscience, according to the American Center for Law and Justice, an organization dedicated to protecting constitutional rights.

The state circuit court in Springfield has issued a temporary restraining order against the governor of Illinois, barring him from enforcing a 2005 administrative regulation that forced pharmacies to dispense Plan B and other abortion-inducing drugs.

The decision, just released on Friday, comes in a lawsuit over the dispute.

"This is yet another step on the road to full protection for the rights of conscience of all health care workers," said Francis J. Manion, ACLJ senior counsel who argued the motion on behalf of pharmacists.

In December, the Bush administration issued a "conscience rule" that assured the protection of healthcare providers who refuse to participate in services they are morally opposed to, such as abortion. The regulation would cut off federal funding to health care facilities that denied their workers the right to conscience.

However, the Obama administration is seeking to rescind this rule, denying health workers the ability to object to giving certain medications or performing certain procedures based on moral objections.  Click here to view the video on this.

The ACLJ has been involved in a number of cases since the 2005 executive order in Illinois, implemented by impeached Gov. Rod Blagojevich. His plan specifically targeted pro-life pharmacists who refused to give out abortion-inducing drugs.

His executive order was a result of urging from pro-abortion organizations including Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro Choice America.

Manion said that the ACLJ would continue fighting for the conscience rights.

"The court rejected the attempt of Illinois officials to trample on the rights of our clients and disregard existing laws passed by the legislature for the very purpose of protecting those rights," Manion said.

"We will continue to press this issue until we have obtained full protection for the conscience rights of these professionals who should not have to choose between their deeply held religious beliefs and license revocation and other penalties," he said.

The ACLJ's clients, Luke VanderBleek and Glenn Kosirog, had a significant interest at stake. The two own five pharmacies combined and both have deeply rooted religious convictions that make them unwilling to sell drugs that would result in abortion. A hearing for a permanent injunction regarding the Illinois Health Care Right of Conscience Act will be take place in June.

"All the conscience laws in the world will only be effective if those whose rights are endangered are ready to fight attempts by government and private entities to ignore them," Manion said. "We will continue to fight for pro-life health care workers to ensure that existing laws have the teeth in them needed to be effective."

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is currently soliciting public opinion on Obama's plan to remove conscience clause protection at the federal level. The HHS public comment period ends this week.

The ACLJ has organized a petition to keep the conscience clause in place so that medical professionals will not be required to act against their morals and convictions. More than 200,000 Americans have signed on to the petition.

Hundreds of babies saved from abortion in recent pro-life campaign

Spring Campaign Director Shawn Carney

As the 40 Days for Life Campaign nears the completion of its spring session, its leaders claim to have helped saved nearly four hundred babies from abortion. Organizers are now judging the campaign's effects and considering how to extend its success. The campaign encourages actions like 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, vigils outside abortion clinics and extensive community outreach.

"It was an amazing 40 days," said spring campaign director Shawn Carney. "Courageous people stood and prayed in rain, cold weather and snowstorms. Abortion workers tried to smear this effort with accusations that 40 Days for Life volunteers' prayers 'intimidated' their clients. But none of this could dissuade peaceful, determined people who know their efforts touch hearts and impact communities."

According to the campaign, participants' efforts helped save 389 babies from abortion. Activities reportedly were held in 135 cities in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Northern Ireland.

"There are undoubtedly others that we don't know about," said Carney. "We're aware that many appointments were canceled when several clinics closed unexpectedly on days when abortions are normally scheduled."

The campaign joined forces with the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, in which men and women with abortion experiences came forward to pray at abortion clinics and to warn women about the physical, emotional and spiritual damage they risk by undergoing an abortion.

40 Days for Life reports that over its four campaigns 466 local efforts have taken place in 240 separate cities in all 50 states and seven other countries. The organization says that more than 200,000 individuals and more than 4,000 churches have participated. Additionally, at least 17 abortion clinic employees have quit their jobs.

Its next campaign is scheduled for the fall from September 23 to November 1. Its website is at www.40DaysForLife.com.
