Planned Parenthood report ignores abortion

'Deceitful' Planned Parenthood report ignores abortion

The president of Planned Parenthood has sent an annual report to donors, but the topic of abortion is nowhere to be found.

According to LifeNews.com, instead of focusing on abortion, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards mentioned a rise in dispersing birth control, contraception, and other supposed legitimate medical services in the report. She also boasted about helping convince 11 more states to "decline federal abstinence-only funding, bringing the total to 26."

Jim Sedlak of American Life League finds it odd that Richards left out abortion, considering Planned Parenthood clinics perform 24 percent of the abortions done in America. "But they don't want to admit it. They don't want to talk about it," he notes. "They continually claim it is not a major part of their business, even though it provides a third of their clinic income."

The omission, according to Sedlak, is simply an example of Planned Parenthood's deceitful nature, adding that it creates a false image. "With the amount of abortions that Planned Parenthood does in the ever-increasing number of Planned Parenthood clinics that do abortions -- over 287 clinics do abortions in their own facilities -- and yet the organization's president doesn't even mention it," he adds. "How ridiculous that would be."

Obama's Marching Orders

Abortion Establishment Presents Obama With Marching Orders

"Reproductive health is one of the most politically perilous issues any new administration has to deal with. But there's some good news on this front for President-elect Obama: He may face lower expectations from abortion-rights backers than some of his predecessors."

Introduction to "Advocates Want Bush Abortion Policies Reversed," a piece by Julie Rovner that aired last night on NPR's "All Things Considered."

"What advocates were less eager to share with the public is the detailed roadmap included in the document for the changes in policy needed to improve reproductive health for women both here and abroad. Several advocates cited concerns that the administration would be criticized as doing the bidding of reproductive health community if it made use of the specific legal reasoning outlined in the document."

From Emily Douglas's blog entry yesterday on the pro-abortion website, Rhrealitycheck.org, alluding to a 55-page wish list submitted to the Obama transition team by an alliance of PPFA, NARAL, and about 50 other pro-abortion groups. Apparently, the coalition did not expect the Obama team to post their grab bag on Obama's http://change.gov website.

I know my first reaction should be anger. But I confess that because pro-abortionists' contempt for truth is matched only by the transparent insincerity of their cover stories, my first response is often a kind of stunned bemusement.

Nothing against Ms. Rovner. The narrative of her piece reflects the for public consumption mantra of the Abortion Establishment. Nothing here but us moderates eager to change the "tone" of the abortion debate and quite willing, perhaps, not to "press for more sweeping changes that would take legislative action by Congress," as Rovner described it.

Wow, talk about hands across the water. All the likes of PPFA and NARAL (supposedly) want is, say, an executive order ending the Mexico City policy. (For newcomers, this is an executive order that denies federal "family planning" funds to private organizations that promote abortion in foreign nations.)

That's the public face of the usual suspects. What did they say in the aforementioned 55-page memo which, according to Douglas, they hadn't intended "to go public"?

They begin by asking for the sky, the moon, and the stars in the first 100 days. Then, over the next 1,300 days, they ask for the solar system, the galaxy, the universe, and, for good measure, any parallel universes that might exist. (Before I forget, helpful as ever, they even provided specific suggested language for presidential memorandums and the like.)

Striving, as they are, for moderation, all they want (to give just a sampling) is everything from the previously mentioned executive order, to funding the United Nations Population Fund (which has been an aider and an abettor of China's forced abortion and involuntarily sterilization policies), to health care "reform" that weaves abortion into every nook and cranny of the system, to the obliteration of those pesky conscience clauses, to an assurance that all evidence demonstrating abortion's aftershocks on women is suppressed (this is called "Reestablish[ing] a standard of excellence for federal appointees"), to the nomination of exclusively pro-abortion judges and justices, payment for abortions of all Medicaid-eligible women, and an all-purpose "Improve Access to Abortion Care," which includes passing the egregiously mis-labeled "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA), which is better described as the "Federal No-Limits-On-Abortion" bill and/or the "Freedom for Partial-Birth Abortionists Act."

How much more "moderate" can you get than this?

If you'd like to read and then comment on the recommendations of the Abortion Establishment to its favorite son, go to http://change.gov/open_government/entry/advancing_reproductive_rights_and_health_in_a_new_administration.

The Pill Causes Abortion

American Society of Reproductive Medicine Statement Confirms the Pill Causes Abortion

Amidst an ongoing debate among prolife advocates about whether to classify the Pill as an abortifacient or a prophylactic, pro-abortion advocates have published an authoritative statement declaring that the Pill prevents implantation of embryos, thereby causing an abortion.

In a supplement to its November 2008 issue, top reproductive health journal Fertility and Sterility published the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) statement, "Hormonal contraception: recent advances and controversies."

In a summary of the development of contraception in the United States the statement called oral contraceptives the "most widely used" reversible method.  In the "wide variety" of oral contraceptives that are available, the "mechanisms of action" are the same, said the statement: "inhibition of ovulation, alteration in the cervical mucus, and/or modification of the endometrium, thus preventing implantation."

Pro-life advocates who oppose abortion, but not contraception, have long considered the Pill as an ethical contraceptive option, as opposed to the IUD, which causes abortions by preventing implantation.  However, the statement by the ASRM clearly indicates that the pill is medically classified as a drug that acts by "preventing implantation," thereby causing the death of a fertilized embryo – a unique and living human being.

A large body of literature supports this statement, including articles from Fertility and Sterility.  The most significant of these is a 1996 study by a group of OB/GYNs from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, that concluded that "impaired uterine receptivity" is "one mechanism by which OCs exert their contraceptive actions."

Obama could set pro-life movement back decades

Obama could set pro-life movement back decades

The Baptist Press posted a few good articles all referring to what Obama is or could do to the Pro-Life Movement.  Instead of listing them all in their entireties, we are posting them in summaries below with links to the entire articles.

Obama could set pro-life movement back decades

Faced with a strengthened pro-choice majority in Congress and a new pro-choice president, pro-life groups are gearing up for a political fight to prevent passage of the Freedom of Choice Act, a bill that could set back their cause by decades.

FOCA, as it is often called, has been proposed by abortion rights supporters for two decades but now actually may have the votes for passage, particularly with President-elect Obama -- a FOCA supporter -- in office. It has two prongs: 1) it would make abortion a "fundamental right" for women and ensure that abortion remains legal even if Roe v. Wade someday is overturned and 2) would legalize partial-birth abortion once again and nullify all restrictions on abortion, such as waiting periods and parental notification laws. Additionally, it almost certainly would require taxpayer funding of abortion.

On 1st day Obama could increase abortions

-One quick signature after Barack Obama takes office Jan. 20 would show the president-elect wasn't serious about reducing the number of abortions, a pro-life policy expert says.

Pro-life and pro-choice advocates alike expect Obama to rescind by executive action -- possibly on his first day in the White House -- a policy that bars federal funds from going to organizations that promote or perform abortions in foreign countries. If the newly inaugurated president were to issue such an order, he would eliminate what is known as the Mexico City Policy.

"Giving hundreds of millions of dollars" to promote abortion as a method of family planning "will greatly increase the number of abortions" overseas over time, said Douglas Johnson, legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC).

Pro-life policies likely Obama targets

Rules barring federal funds for abortion promotion overseas and embryonic stem cell research appear to be the most likely pro-life targets for reversal by executive orders from President-elect Barack Obama.

After he is sworn in Jan. 20 as the 44th U.S. president, Obama could rescind those policies now in effect without congressional action. Pro-lifers fear he could overturn both within days after taking office.

"I'm very concerned that President-elect Obama, having tacked to the center on economic and foreign policy, will tack hard left on social issues such as the right to life in order to placate his radical leftist supporters," said Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. "I pray that my fears will not be confirmed."

University Yanks Abortion Insurance, now Refers for Abortions

University Yanks Abortion Insurance, but Refers for Abortions

The Catholic University of San Francisco (USF) has apologized for the abortion coverage included in a new health insurance package for USF students, and has affirmed they will strike it out of the plan.  However, at the same time a contributing editor with Our Sunday Visitor has just revealed that the University's health clinic refers students seeking abortion to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

After news broke of the brochure's abortion coverage, Assistant Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs Gary MacDonald stated: "It was not the University's intention to offer this coverage.  USF supports the Catholic Church's views on the sanctity of life, at all stages, and we will remove this provision from our student health plan.

"We regret this mistake, and we take full responsibility for not adequately reviewing the contract. We are grateful to those who brought this issue to our attention," said MacDonald.

Catholic Internet circles were abuzz over the news of USF's Aetna health insurance brochure, which included abortion coverage despite purporting to be tailored to the school's needs. The insurance plan, set to begin next fall, was to be mandatory for students who did not already have comparable health coverage.

Yet another report has recalled specters of USF's poor track record in defending women and children on campus from abortion.

Valerie Schmalz, a contributing editor at Our Sunday Visitor, reported that students who seek an abortion at the University's health clinic at St. Mary's Medical Center are referred to abortion providers.  (See bottom of blog post at: http://www.osvdailytake.com/2008/12/jesuit-university-health-plan-covers.html)

An official at the hospital reportedly told Schmalz that St. Mary's refers students who request abortion or contraception either to Planned Parenthood or to Aetna providers.

"We just provide them with resources of where they want to go," said St. Mary's senior director Les McGee. "We're not involved in terminating pregnancies."  McGee, who oversees the student health clinic, said the hospital did not keep records on the number of students requesting abortion.

Calls to St. Mary's Medical Center were not returned by press time.

In 2002, USF was one of a few Catholic universities called to task by the Association of Students at Catholic Colleges for Planned Parenthood referrals.  At that time, USF came under fire for linking to Planned Parenthood and another pro-abortion center at a University website on pregnancy.  The page was later removed.

In 2007, the University hosted the Human Rights Film Festival, which featured at least two films promoting abortion and same-sex "marriage," as well as a report by four USF nursing students that includes recommendations for contraceptive use.

Population Is Proving To Be An Asset

Population Is Proving To Be An Asset, Not A Factor That Contributes To Poverty

"The extermination of millions of unborn children, in the name of the fight against poverty"

     - Pope Benedict XVI

In his message for World Day of Peace, released yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI stated the long unrecognized truth that increased population has proved an asset rather than a detriment in terms of development.  "Poverty is often considered a consequence of demographic change," he said.

"For this reason, there are international campaigns afoot to reduce birth-rates, sometimes using methods that respect neither the dignity of the woman, nor the right of parents to choose responsibly how many children to have; graver still, these methods often fail to respect even the right to life," he continued.  "The extermination of millions of unborn children, in the name of the fight against poverty, actually constitutes the destruction of the poorest of all human beings."

For decades the pro-life movement internationally has pointed out that birth control and "reproductive health" are often pushed in the name of economic prosperity, but that instead they actually repress societies by reducing their population, therefore compromising the ability to utilize resources and achieve self-sufficiency.

The fact that world powers knowingly use population-control ideology in foreign policy to suppress potential competitors rather than help them is remarkably substantiated by an executive-level government document entitled National Security Study Memorandum 200 (NSSM 200), published in 1974 and declassified in 1989.

The Memorandum, written by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, admitted that competition would rise when developing nations had sufficient populations to fully utilize resources.  To address the problem, the report spelled out a plan to bring about "a two-child family on the average" throughout the world "by about the year 2000."

In accord with such U.S. foreign policy, the world's foremost financial institutions have also faithfully pursued population control in poor countries, and thinly veil their demographic assault - fueled principally by abortion - with well-known euphemisms.

In a 1992 operations evaluation, the World Bank wrote a report indicating that economic growth could be used to seduce a society into accepting demographic suppression: "If the Bank wants to work in countries that do not accept population control as the rationale, it must base its population program on a broader and more flexible set of principles. This could start from a recognition that the overall objective is promotion of sustainable development in living standards …"

In his recent remarks, Benedict noted that such a rationale does not withstand the burden of evidence: "In 1981, around 40% of the world's population was below the threshold of absolute poverty, while today that percentage has been reduced by as much as a half, and whole peoples have escaped from poverty despite experiencing substantial demographic growth," he said.  "This goes to show that resources to solve the problem of poverty do exist, even in the face of an increasing population.

"Nor must it be forgotten that, since the end of the Second World War, the world's population has grown by four billion, largely because of certain countries that have recently emerged on the international scene as new economic powers, and have experienced rapid development specifically because of the large number of their inhabitants. Moreover, among the most developed nations, those with higher birth-rates enjoy better opportunities for development.

"In other words, population is proving to be an asset, not a factor that contributes to poverty," the Pope affirmed.

(To see Benedict XVI's full World Day of Peace address, go to: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/messages/peace/documents/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20081208_xlii-world-day-peace_en.html)

Benedict's reasoning is similar to that of his predecessor John Paul II, who in Evangelium Vitae addressed foreign policies that make use of the population control ideology.  He strongly condemned the impetus to suppress weaker countries through such tactics, and compared such governments to the Egyptian Pharaoh who attempted to keep the Hebrews in slavery by ordering every male newborn killed, saying "not a few of the powerful of the earth act in the same way."

"They too are haunted by the current demographic growth, and fear that the most prolific and poorest peoples represent a threat for the well-being and peace of their own countries. Consequently, rather than wishing to face and solve these serious problems with respect for the dignity of individuals and families and for every person's inviolable right to life, they prefer to promote and impose by whatever means a massive program of birth control," he wrote.

Vatican Reiterates Pro-Life Stance

Vatican Reiterates Pro-Life Stance on Bioethics Issues

The Vatican, in its first authoritative statement on reproductive science in more than 20 years, today condemned human cloning, designer babies and embryonic stem-cell research, The Washington Post reported.

The 32-page document, which has the approval of Pope Benedict, warns about the moral dangers of a variety of procedures, including the genetic testing of embryos to identify those with defects.

"It makes very clear that the Church is very closely watching scientific progress and favors that progress but wants ethics to be part of that," Richard Doerflinger, deputy director of pro-life activities at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, told The Post. "The whole subject of misuse of technology to demean human dignity is a major concern."

New law would make Spain with highest number of abortions in EU

New law would make Spain the country with highest number of abortions in EU

The president of the Institute for Family Policy, Eduardo Hertfelder, warned this week that the new law on abortion currently under consideration would make Spain the country with the highest number of abortions in the EU by the year 2015.

"In fact, the future law on abortion would ensure that Spain surpasses 224,000 abortions per year by 2015, which would mean that more than 670 children would not be born each day because of abortion." With an abortion occurring "every 2.15 minutes," this situation will "only serve to make abortion centers rich at the expense of women who see themselves as doomed to abortion," Hertfelder said.

He also noted that "in order to grasp the magnitude of these figures, we only need to point out that the number of abortions by the year 2015 will be the equivalent of the sum total of the populations of communities like Castilla y Leon (2.5 million people), Castilla La Mancha (2 million people), Galicia (2.7 million people), etc., or the equivalent of the sum total of the populations of Aragon, Navarre and Cantabria."

Swiss Haven for Suicides

Death on TV Reveals a Swiss Haven for Suicides

Twice a week, on average, in a nondescript building by the railroad tracks, a foreigner comes to die.

Most are terminally ill. Some are young and physically healthy except for a permanent disability or severe, debilitating mental disorder.

Drawn by Switzerland's reputation as a trouble-free place for foreigners to end their lives, more than 100 Germans, Britons, French, Americans and others come to this small commuter town just east of Zurich each year to lie down on a bed in an industrial park building and drink a lethal dose of barbiturates.

Now the country's suicide practices are under the spotlight after British TV last week showed Craig Ewert, a 59-year-old Chicago man with a severe form of motor neuron disease, killing himself in Switzerland two years ago.

Incident Involving Planned Parenthood Clinic Aide Sparks Protest

American Life League, a Catholic anti-abortion group, held a prayer vigil and protest Saturday morning over what the group believes is Planned Parenthood's attempt to cover up a case of statutory rape. Last week, Planned Parenthood of Indiana fired a health center aide caught on video telling a patient who claimed to be a pregnant 13-year-old to lie about the age of the father. A 20-year-old UCLA student posing as the teen secretly shot the video in Bloomington in June. In the footage, she tells the aide a 31-year-old man impregnated her.

Britain Murdered 10,000 Polish Babies

Britain Murdered 10,000 Polish Babies Last Year

Ten thousand Polish women had abortions in Britain last year, it has been reported, in procedures which are thought to have cost the NHS between £5million and £10m. Thousands of the women are thought to have come to Britain specifically for the procedure, which is illegal in Poland. People coming to Britain as temporary workers are given a National Insurance number, which allows them to register with a doctor and have NHS treatment. Britain is thought to be a particularly popular destination as terminations can be carried out as late as 24 weeks into a pregnancy. In several other EU countries, abortions can not be carried out after 12 weeks. The figures were reportedly disclosed by the Polish Federation for Women and Family Planning. Aleksandra Jozefowska, a spokesman for the Federation, told The Sun: "On Polish internet sites you can find lots of information on how to obtain an abortion in Britain. And every week I have two or three phone calls from women who want to know about abortion in England."

New Tests for Down Syndrome Could Lead to More Abortions

New Tests for Down Syndrome Could Lead to More Abortions and Less Support for Families

Currently, Down syndrome is picked up with blood screens and ultrasounds, then confirmed with invasive tests such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, which insert needles into the uterus and slightly increase the risk of miscarriage. Some women forgo the tests for that reason. Next year, though, new, noninvasive genetic screens that pose no harm to fetuses or mothers may start arriving in doctors' offices. If they become common, they could result in more diagnoses, more abortions, a dwindling Down population and a drop in support for families who carry to term—what Down activist Patricia Bauer has called "the elimination of an entire class of people." Even now, only 5,000 babies are born with the syndrome each year.

Judge Lets Suit against Planned Parenthood Stand

Illinois Judge Lets Suit against Planned Parenthood Stand

In a victory for life advocates, an Illinois judge has decided to let part of a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood of Illinois go forward.

The case began when an abortion mega-clinic moved into the Chicago suburb of Aurora last year under a different name. When life advocates took a peaceful stand, Planned Parenthood ran an attack ad in the Daily Herald accusing pro-lifers of having "a history of advocating illegal and sometimes violent behavior."

The Pro-Life Action League sued the abortion giant over the ad. On Wednesday, Judge Judith Brawka of Kane County Circuit Court upheld slander and libel portions of the suit.

"I'm really happy that this common lie of pro-lifers being violent is being exposed," pro-life blogger Jill Stanek told CitizenLink.

The $7.5 million, 22,000-square-foot abortion clinic has 12 surgical recovery rooms.

Judge Upholds Counts of Libel against Planned Parenthood

Judge Upholds Counts of Libel against Planned Parenthood in Scheidler Case

Late yesterday afternoon, Judge Judith Brawka of Kane County Circuit Court upheld two counts of slander and libel, alleged by Eric Scheidler and the Pro-Life Action League, in a lawsuit filed in 2007, holding that those counts should not be dismissed as a matter of law.

The court's decision overruled an objection by defendants, Planned Parenthood of Illinois and its Chief Executive Officer Stephen Trombley, that the alleged defamatory, libelous and slanderous statements were immune from suit under Illinois' newly enacted Citizen Participation Act.

The counts were based on an open letter which Planned Parenthood placed in the Chicago Daily Herald on September 7, 2007, stating that pro-life activists opposing Planned Parenthood's new factory-sized abortion facility in Aurora had a history of advocating violent behavior. Stephen Trombley had also made statements to the press in the lobby of the federal courthouse in Chicago to the same effect.

Scheidler and the Pro-Life Action League have insisted that they have no history of violent misbehavior nor of advocating violence and that such claims were already rejected in the 22-year-old nationwide federal class-action lawsuit, NOW vs. Scheidler, which they won in the US Supreme Court not once but twice, in 2003 and again in 2006. Planned Parenthood was a member of the class of abortion clinics that participated in that lawsuit, and they lost.

The plaintiffs expect to proceed to litigate the two counts that were sustained all the way to final judgment against Planned Parenthood. As for other counts of their libel case that were dismissed, they intend to appeal Judge Brawka's ruling against those counts under the Citizen Participation Act as soon as possible. That Act immunizes from suit any efforts to obtain favorable government action, but only if in furtherance of a lawful exercise First Amendment rights. Judge Brakwa on the other hand dismissed several other libel counts on the rationale that even malicious lies were immunized from suit if intended to persuade government officials. This overbroad reading of the Act is what plaintiffs intend to appeal.

Tom Brejcha, president and chief counsel for the Thomas More Society, who is representing the plaintiffs in the litigation, said that yesterday's ruling is "very welcome and signals that at some point in this case Planned Parenthood is going to have to come to grips with the fact that they lied. Those lies constituted defamatory torts for which Planned Parenthood and Mr. Trombley must be held to account to the plaintiffs, whose good name was illegally trashed for no reason and with malice aforethought."

"The Citizen Participation Act," continued Brejcha, "also called the Anti-SLAPP Act, is not a license to lie with impunity and ruin someone's good name for malicious reasons."
