Abortion Empire Collapses

Abortion Empire Collapses as Abortionist Pleads Guilty to 9 Felonies

In a surprise appearance, abortionist Bertha Pinedo Bugarin, 48, walked into a San Diego County courtroom on Thursday, December 4, 2008, and pled guilty to nine felony counts of committing abortions without a medical license. Just three days earlier, Bugarin plead no contest to seven comparable felonies in Los Angeles.

Her entire abortion empire has collapsed and every abortion mill in her infamous Clinica Medica Para La Mujer abortion chain has permanently closed.

Bugarin now faces up to nine years in jail for her convictions in San Diego County, and up to ten more years for her Los Angeles case. She is scheduled for sentencing in Los Angeles on January 20, and in San Diego on February 6, 2009.

San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis stated, "This criminal preyed on women in the Hispanic community and has now been held accountable. By passing herself off as a doctor, she put these women's lives in serious danger."

Bugarin once owned a chain of 11 abortion mills, staffed by abortionists who, one by one, lost their licenses or left due to offences ranging from medical negligence to Medi-Cal fraud. One of Bugarin's abortionists, Laurence Reich, was stripped of his license after being convicted a second time for sex crimes. Reich was arrested earlier this year for continuing to do abortions at Bugarin's clinics without a license. He faces his own trial sometime next year.

Operation Rescue began to focus on Bugarin's clinics in 1999, documenting and exposing the dangerous nature of the abortion chain to the public. Within a year, several of Bugarin's abortionists, including co-owner Nicholas Braemer, lost their medical licenses.

Operation Rescue continued over the years to expose and report wrong-doing by Bugarin and her abortionists, and brought public pressure to bear.

Today, eviction and utility shut-off notices are posted on Bugarin's former abortion offices. Only one, the Santa Ana location, has been reopened under a new owner and continues to operate under another name.

"This is a huge victory for the pro-life movement, and a prime example of how we can use the laws that are on the books to close abortion mills forever," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "Bugarin acted as if she was above the law, as so many abortionists do. The prosecutors did not agree, and now Bugarin should remain behind bars for many years. Thank God!"

Researchers Question Johns Hopkins Study

Researchers Question Johns Hopkins Study Claiming No Evidence for Post-Abortion Syndrome

A team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University has asserted after surveying various reports that "the best research" on the aftermath of abortion does not support the existence of negative psychological effects. Numerous researchers and pro-life leaders, however, have immediately responded by challenging the Johns Hopkins team's conclusion as suspect and based on subjective methods.

"The best research does not support the existence of a 'post-abortion syndrome' similar to post-traumatic stress disorder," Dr. Robert Blum, who led the study, said in a statement.

After examining 21 reports involving over 150,000 women, the team concluded that only "studies with the most flawed methodology" produced consistent evidence that a mother experienced psychological distress after aborting her child.  "Scientists are still conducting research to answer politically motivated questions," the report added.

"Based on the best available evidence, emotional harm should not be a factor in abortion policy. If the goal is to help women, program and policy decisions should not distort science to advance political agendas," said Vignetta Charles, a researcher and doctoral student at Johns Hopkins who worked on the study.

The team also criticized the U.S. Supreme Court for banning late-term abortions based on the notion of harm done to the mother's psyche.

The report follows on the heels of three very recent reports confirming the opposite hypothesis - that post-abortive women are at far higher risk for prolonged depression, substance abuse, and alcohol abuse.

One, led by Dr. Priscilla Coleman, professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Bowling Green State University, was released last week, confirming that abortion increases women's risk of various mental health issues.  Researchers at the prestigious Otago University of New Zealand this week also found that a 30-year study involving post-abortive women concluded they were 30% more likely to suffer depression.  A third study released by the University of Queensland the same week concluded that women were more than three times as likely to abuse drugs or alcohol after choosing to abort their child.

Dr. Coleman has said she is convinced the Johns Hopkins research is seriously flawed.  She told LifeNews.com that the study failed to account for any of the studies addressing post-abortive substance abuse. Although substance abuse is "one of the major mental health concerns of women who have aborted and for women in general," Coleman said that "no explanation is provided for this blatant omission."

Coleman also said that she and her colleagues disagreed with the Johns Hopkins team's rating system that categorized each study from "excellent" to "very poor," and said the ratings were essentially arbitrary.

"There is no way that several of the studies listed as 'Very Good' would have met 4 out of 5 of the quality indicators necessary for the rating if rated by an objective evaluator who was not invested in deriving a conclusion that is consonant with pro-choice ideology," Coleman said.  Coleman noted that a seminal and prestigious 2006 study by pro-abortion New Zealand researcher David Fergusson was only listed as "fair" by the team.

Also, Coleman pointed out several studies published in respected journals that pointed to the detrimental effects of abortion but went ignored by the Hopkins team.  "The review 'missed' numerous high quality studies that meet their inclusion criteria. The result is an extremely biased selection," she said.

"This is an insult to Johns Hopkins as a credible academic research institution," exclaimed Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council.  Perkins noted: "The ties of senior author Robert Blum to the Alan Guttmacher Institute as a board member and previous board chair as well as the funding of the university's department of Population, Family, and Reproductive Health, where three of the four study authors work, by Planned Parenthood of Maryland, serve as evidence of the political motivation behind the publishing of the study.

"Johns Hopkins should be admonished for stamping such sham science," said Perkins.

Leaders of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign (SNMAC), the world's largest network serving women and men harmed by abortion, today also issued stinging criticism of the report.

"The Johns Hopkins University report's allegation that studies proving the reality of post-abortion depression are politically motivated has to be the new definition of chutzpah," said Janet Morana, co-founder of the SNMAC.  Morana also noted Blum's affiliation with Planned Parenthood, saying, "I wouldn't exactly call this a report done by a disinterested, objective observer."

"Three recent studies, from America, Australia, and New Zealand, documenting abortion's increased risk of subsequent mental and emotional disorders were conveniently ignored by the Johns Hopkins study," added Georgette Forney, another SNMAC co-founder.  "As I and thousands of Silent No More women can testify, the ones playing politics with women's lives are those who ignore the clear evidence of abortion's impact on women in order to advance their own pro-abortion agenda."

Awards for Promoters of Abortion

UN Gives Awards to Promoters of Abortion and Homosexual Agenda

Last week, United Nations (UN) General Assembly president Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann announced the 2008 winners of the UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights, an award for "outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms." This year's winners include former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour and Human Rights Watch (HRW), both staunch global advocates for abortion and homosexual rights.

Brockmann characterized the recipients as "an inspiration to all of us who seek and believe another type of society, another type of political system, another economic model, another world is possible where all persons will be treated as brothers and sisters, without discrimination, exclusion or destruction of life in all its forms."

Arguably the most prominent of the award recipients, Louise Arbour is a long-time proponent of sweeping abortion and homosexual rights.  During her time as High Commissioner, she encouraged human rights treaty monitoring bodies to promote the anti-life, anti-family agenda. Under her leadership, the UN committees responsible for monitoring state compliance with international treaty obligations have become increasingly vocal over national abortion laws – even though no human rights treaty mentions abortion.  During Arbor's four year term, over 60 countries have been pressured to legalize or liberalize abortion access.

A supporter of homosexual rights since her days as a Canadian Supreme Court Justice, Arbour also pledged her office's support for the highly controversial Yogyakarta Principles, which seek to make "sexual orientation" a protected non-discrimination category on par with established categories like race and religion even though the term "sexual orientation" has never been accepted in any binding negotiated UN document.  Moreover, the Principles seek to reinterpret existing human rights to include homosexual marriage and adoption.

Human Rights Watch is another recipient of this year's UN prize.  In recent years, HRW has been a leader in promoting abortion rights, particularly in Latin America. In 2005, HRW released a report on Argentina that recommended liberalized abortion laws. That same year, HRW filed a legal brief in support of a Colombian case challenging the country's once-strict abortion ban. In 2007, HRW also mounted a legal challenge to Nicaragua's abortion law, claiming that Nicaragua's ban is contrary to international law.

Human Rights Watch said that it "believes that decisions about abortion belong to a pregnant woman without interference by the state or others. The denial of a pregnant woman's right to make an independent decision regarding abortion violates or poses a threat to a wide range of human rights."

Other winners of the 2008 Human Rights Prize are radical lawyer and former United States Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Dr. Carolyn Gomes, and Dr. Denis Mukwege. Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto and Catholic nun Sister Dorothy Stang were awarded the Prize posthumously.

The UN Human Rights Prize is awarded every five years. The 2008 awardees were selected from among 189 nominations. The Prize will be awarded in the General Assembly on December 10, the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Kline Gets to Keep Abortion Records

Despite Harsh Words, Kline Gets to Keep Abortion Records

In a 40-page ruling Friday, the Kansas Supreme Court slammed Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline for his handling of an ongoing abortion case. But in the end, after justices called Kline's actions inexcusable and accused him of not having respect for the law, he got what he wanted. Kline gets to keep medical records of women treated at Planned Parenthood in Overland Park — the basis of his pending 107-count criminal case against the clinic. He only has to provide copies of all investigative materials to the Kansas attorney general. They're due next Friday.

Bible: Abortion is Murder

The Bible Regards Abortion as Murder

The Bible has always regarded abortion - killing the child in the womb as murder, a crime punishable by the death penalty. The grounds for this judgment are "Thou shalt not kill" (Ex.20:13); Child Sacrifice, "he shall surely be put to death" (Leviticus 20:1-5); and Exodus 21:22-23, where an example of abortion is found.

Breakthrough Discovery About Adult Stem Cell Behavior

Jumbo Researchers Make Breakthrough Discovery About Adult Stem Cell Behavior

A study published by three Tufts scientists last month offers groundbreaking insight into regenerative science, showing that bio-electrical signals play a major role in determining the behavior of adult stem cells. In their paper, titled "Membrane Potential Controls Adipogenic and Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells," the scientists discuss a new way to control the behavior of adult stem cells using electrical impulses. In previous studies around the world, stem cell manipulation had been conducted using chemical signals.

U.K. Told to Release Figures on Abortion

U.K. Told to Release Figures on Abortion of Disabled Fetuses

A row has broken out in Britain over an attempt by the government to keep the true number of abortions of disabled fetuses secret. It centres on mothers who opt for termination because their fetuses have been diagnosed with conditions such as club foot and cleft palate. Doctors say such conditions can usually be corrected by surgery. The information commissioner has ordered the release of the figures, but the Department of Health is resisting, saying that disclosing the data could lead to women who have late abortions being identified.

Planned Parenthood's Uncle Tom

Obama Is Planned Parenthood's Uncle Tom

Uncle Tom was the figure in Harriet Beecher Stow's famous novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Instead of resisting the enslavement of his race, he helped his slave-owners maintain their control over the lesser field slaves. Uncle Toms would be useful in mistreating and punishing the other slaves, and would receive preferential treatment for it. Obama's an Uncle Tom. Obama has officially consorted with Planned Parenthood in the slaughter of millions of black babies, and in office he plans to expand the reach of the child-killers. ... Barack Obama is the Uncle Tom of Planned Parenthood and Margaret Sanger, who had as their mission to "exterminate the Negro population."

Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cells For Skin Disorder

Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cells May Offer Therapeutic Option For Skin Disorder

Stem cells derived from bone marrow may serve as a novel therapeutic option to treat a disease called epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a disorder characterized by extraordinarily fragile skin, according to a study prepublished online in Blood, the official journal of the American Society of Hematology. Epidermolysis bullosa is a disorder characterized by extraordinarily fragile skin and blistering on touch, akin to third degree burns.

Phony Stem Cell Therapies

Watch Out For Phony Bologna Stem Cell Therapies

Consumers should be wary of Web sites from clinics that offer stem cell treatments, says a study that found a lack of firm medical evidence to back up their claims. The Web sites in the study generally portrayed their therapies as safe, effective and ready for routine use, but published research doesn't support that "overoptimistic" picture, the study authors said. The analysis is presented in the December issue of the journal Cell Stem Cell by scientists at the University of Alberta in Canada. They cautioned that their overall findings can't be applied to the claims of any individual clinic. The study is "a very important wake-up call," said Dr. George Daley, past president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, who had no role in the new report. In recent years, desperate patients with few options have traveled to China and other countries where doctors offer stem cell or other cell treatments for such things as spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease and blindness.

Phill Kline to Return of Abortion Records

Court orders return of abortion records

The Kansas Supreme Court has ordered Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline to turn over abortion patients' medical records.

The records are key evidence in a criminal case Kline filed in October 2007 against a clinic operated by Planned Parenthood in Overland Park. His 107 charges allege the clinic falsified documents and performed illegal late-term abortions.

Kline's Planned Parenthood Criminal Case

Kansas Supreme Court To Rule Today On Kline's Planned Parenthood Criminal Case

The Kansas Supreme Court says it will rule Friday on an abortion clinic's attempt to force a prosecutor to return patients' medical records that have become key evidence for criminal charges against it. The clinic, operated by Planned Parenthood in Overland Park, argues that Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline, an anti-abortion Republican, obtained the records improperly. Kline contends the clinic is trying to block his prosecution of 107 charges alleging it performed illegal late-term abortions and falsified documents. The case is highly unusual because the clinic asked the Supreme Court to intervene even before Kline filed his charges, which include 23 felonies.

Hillary Clinton at State Department Worries

Hillary Clinton at State Department Worries Veterans of UN Abortion Wars

Pro-life activists are reacting with concern at President-elect Barack Obama's selection of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. They see the appointment as foreshadowing a change of America's United Nations (UN) policy with respect to the rights of the unborn.

Critics charge that Hillary Clinton had a major voice in the UN social policy of her husband's administration that encompassed a number of major UN conferences. It was at the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing 1995) that Clinton coined the phrase "women's rights are human rights and human rights are women's rights" that became a global rallying cry for a right to abortion.

While her husband spoke of abortion as something that should be "safe, legal and rare," the on-the-ground efforts of his wife and Tim Wirth, a former US Senator who was Undersecretary for Global Affairs in the Clinton State Department, sought to broaden access to abortion.  Sometimes their work included what some see as dirty tricks. On one occasion Wirth, who headed the US delegation at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, reportedly told Egyptian security officials that a certain pro-life activist was a terrorist, resulting in his arrest and detention.  Congressman Chris Smith intervened to secure the innocent man's release.

Veteran pro-life lobbyist Jeanne Head, a fixture at the UN who attended the Beijing conference, expressed her concern to C-Fam's The Friday Fax that as Secretary of State, "Hillary would promote her husband's agenda at the United Nations to make abortion a fundamental human right worldwide."

Coupled with other incoming pro-abortion picks by the President-elect, like communications director Ellen Moran of Emily's List, which raises money for pro-abortion candidates, and former NARAL Pro-choice America legal director Dawn Johnsen as a member of Obama's transition team, critics question what happened to the new administration's promised "common ground" on abortion.

Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America, the largest women's public policy group in America, told the Friday Fax that Obama appears to be "peppering abortion proponents throughout his Administration."

There is also concern over Obama's nominee for ambassador to the UN, Susan E. Rice, who worked closely with Wirth when she was Bill Clinton's Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.  Abortion advocates such as Planned Parenthood's Cecile Richards have praised her selection. Rice's published work indicates no open support of abortion, however.

One likely policy change concerns the promotion of "universal access to reproductive health" as a target under Millennium Development (MDG) Goal 5. The Bush administration has repeatedly pointed out that no such target, favored by abortion proponents, was agreed to by UN member states when they voted on the MDGs in 2000.

It is also expected that the US under Obama-Clinton will promote abortion at high level global conferences, in particular the "Beijing plus 15" conference scheduled for 2010 and next year's fifteen-year review of the International Conference on Population and Development, known as "Cairo plus 15."

Interest in these types of conferences by civil society proponents of abortion waned during the Bush years, as abortion advocates were concerned with losing ground. Now that the US is back in the abortion camp, it is expected they will work in close tandem with UN bureaucrats and the European Union to promote a right to abortion as well as radical understandings of homosexual rights.

The UNFPA Investigation

Investigating the UNFPA

We are entering a challenging time for the pro-life movement. Barack Obama will soon take office and, if his rhetoric is any guide, he is determined to overturn existing pro-life policies and promote abortion both at home and abroad. Specifically, Obama has promised the abortion movement that he will refund the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Over the years, this United Nations agency has been implicated in horrible human rights abuses in country after country. From China to Peru, from Vietnam to North Korea, we at PRI have documented how the UNFPA has been complicit in forced abortion and sterilization campaigns. In fact, it is largely because of our groundbreaking investigations of the UNFPA's activities that the Bush Administration has refused to fund the UNFPA for the past seven years. This victory for life and family may soon be undone, however.

To help meet this challenge we at PRI have launched a new video series entitled "Exposing the UNFPA: Investigative Realism from PRI." In this series of short, informative videos we document how the UNFPA is driven by its determination to control the world's population, even if this means running roughshod over human rights.

Most Americans don't know this. Not a few believe--wrongly--that the UNFPA is a benevolent organization that simply promotes voluntary "reproductive health" programs throughout the world. We need your help to expose its true purpose and activities.

PRI has already produced the first two videos in the "Exposing the UNFPA" series, and we will be producing two more before the end of the year. The videos are available on our YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/colinpri1.

These videos must be sent to the people who need to see them, but we cannot do this without your help. We need you to tell your friends and family about these videos. We need you to post them on your blog or Facebook, and to email them to friends and acquaintances--even if they are pro-choice. The videos are also available on DVD. Just call, e-mail, or write our office and we will send you a free DVD.

With your help we can keep the UNFPA out of the taxpayer's pocketbook, and out of the lives of innocents abroad.

Surplus Embryos

Parents Torn over Surplus Embryos

At least 400,000 embryos are frozen at clinics around the country, and many of their parents don't know what to do with them, The New York Times reported.

A survey of 1,020 patients at nine fertility clinics shows 43 percent do not want their embryos destroyed — yet 66 percent said they would allow their embryos to be destroyed for research. The survey is being published today in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

The survey suggests couples believe destructive embryonic stem-cell research is a worthy pursuit. In reality, it means the end of their young children's lives.

Ron Stoddart, executive director of Nightlight Christian Adoptions, said the results don't make any sense.

"People believe that embryonic stem cells hold the key to every cure for any disease known to mankind," he told Family News in Focus. "The reality is, there have been no cures (and) no treatments developed from embryonic stem cells. All of the advances have been made from adult stem cells."

Stoddart, who helps to find adoptive families for frozen embryos, said he tries to help couples understand that frozen embryos are living beings.

"When an embryo is created, that is life," he said. "That is the same life they used to build their family. The lives that are remaining frozen also deserve a chance at continued life.

"There are families ready and willing to accept these embryos, have them implanted and give birth to those adopted children."

Abortion/Depression Link Plays Politics with Women's Health

Researchers Who Deny Abortion/Depression Link Play Politics with Women's Health

Leaders of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign (SNMAC), the world's largest network of women and men harmed by abortion, today criticized a report by Johns Hopkins University researchers that claims there is no link between abortion and mental health issues.  The report said efforts to show that psychological distress is higher among post-abortive women "appear to be politically motivated."

"The Johns Hopkins University report's allegation that studies proving the reality of post-abortion depression are politically motivated has to be the new definition of chutzpah," said Janet Morana, co-founder of the SNMAC.  "The Johns Hopkins study was led by a man, Dr. Robert Blum, who once chaired the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood's research arm, the Alan Guttmacher Institute, and who has been used as an expert witness by the Center for Reproductive Rights.  I wouldn't exactly call this a report done by a disinterested, objective observer."

Planned Parenthood Gift Certificates in Illinois

Unhealthy gift certificates in Illinois

Planned Parenthood of Illinois is offering gift certificates, copying Planned Parenthood of Indiana.  Their web site promotion asks, "What could be more important than your health this holiday season?"  Noting "it's becoming harder and harder to afford staying healthy," they suggest, "So think about giving a gift of health this year."

What PP has to do with health is unknown.  Their promotion of casual sex leads to more unwanted pregnancies, more STDs, and more abortions.  Pregnancy is not a disease and contraception is not medicine.  Contraception tricks the woman's body into acting pregnant to try preventing a pregnancy.  Sounds real healthy to me.  And that is before you consider the negative psychological consequences of broken relationships and casual sex.  Does that contribute to the increased rate of teen suicides?

Sexual health is achieved by practicing abstinence until marriage and fidelity and natural family planning within marriage.  Keep teenagers as far away from Planned Parenthood as possible if you want to help them stay healthy.  Casual sex as promoted by Planned Parenthood is never healthy, so a Planned Parenthood gift certificate cannot be a "gift of health."

Planned Parenthood encourages continuing sex, even when they know it is statutory rape of a teen by an older man, as revealed most recently by undercover research in Indiana and North Carolina.  How is that for showing real care and concern for the health of young women who seek their version of "staying healthy"?

Here is the text of the Planned Parenthood promotion...

Planned Parenthood Gift Certificates

Give the Best Gift of All- a Healthy, Happy New Year!

What could be more important than your health this holiday season? But for many people it's becoming harder and harder to afford staying healthy.

When we are trying to make decisions between what we want versus what we need- why not give both? By giving a Planned Parenthood Gift Certificate you are giving a gift of health- something everyone needs. The recipient can choose from a variety of services. They can put it toward their yearly gynecological visit which includes a breast exam to check for breast cancer and a pap test to screen for cervical cancer. The recipient could use it towards their next supply of their birth control methods, so maybe purchasing two packs of pills instead of one.

So think about giving a gift of health this year. And if by chance you have already bought and wrapped that beautiful pearl necklace or designer watch- there's always New Year's Eve to think about...

Gift certificates can be purchased in denominations of $10, $25 and $50 at any Planned Parenthood of Illinois Health Center beginning Monday December 8th, 2008.

Planned Parenthood Suspends Employee Over Rape-Coverup

An online video has led Planned Parenthood in Bloomington to suspend one of its employees and begin an internal investigation. The video shows a 20-year-old UCLA student, who went undercover as a 13-year-old, going into Planned Parenthood, saying she was impregnated by a 31-year-old man and asking for help. The Planned Parenthood employee, "Diana," is seen telling the teen to cross state lines to get an abortion that doesn't require parental consent.
